WBC Light Welterweight champion Alberto Puello feels confident in the victory against former IBF champion Subriel Matias on Saturday, July 12 in Queens, New York. The sparring that Puello (24-0, 10 COs) did with former Matias conquester Liam Paro made him believe that he would overcome on Saturday.
Puello vs Matias: Style Division
This fight did not receive as much hype as the other games on Saturday’s map at Louis Armstrong Stadium, but it could be the best of the night.
Puello-Matias struggles on the bottom map of Edgar Berlanga against Hamzah Sheeraz Dazn ppv.
It is a classic style fit between the boxer, Puello and the Puncher, Matias (22-2, 22 COs). This is one that holds Puello better than his last fight against pure boxer Sandor Martin in March.
It was a style collision for Puello because he had to change his usual boxing approach to become more of a puncher to win a close 12-round decision.
Sparring Paro: Puello’s Edge
“For the Sandor Martin fight, I left a little on the table. Because of my firing sessions with Liam Paro, I feel that I will be in order with this battle,” Alberto Puello said Box news about his title defense against Subriel Matias Saturday.
The Australian paro acted well, using movement, Jabs and rough home tactics to neutralize his offense almost entirely. He created a blueprint to beat Matias by moving and tying him to prevent him from getting his shots off.
Subriel is a flat -footed fighter who needs his opponents to be quiet for him to get his heavy shots off. He can’t punch as he moves, and he’s slow to cut off the ring.
Puello’s dominance: “dominates an animal”
“I will dominate him as if you are dominating an animal. Most importantly, I win this battle. It doesn’t matter if it’s through a decision or door knockout. I just go out there and make sure I win this battle, ”Puello said of Matias.
There is an excellent chance that Puello Subriel will beat easier than he did Gary Antuanne Russell, another Slugger with the power he defeated in 2024 by a 12-round decision. In that fight, Puello had to put a little more on his bumps to fight Russell. He couldn’t just box himself. He will have to do the same against Matias on Saturday night, because he can’t just box and move.
“It excites me that there is a lot of talent around these weights and this weight, and that I can consider myself one of the numbers in this section,” Puello said.
“I would prefer to fight Hitchins. I think we could have a big fight that people want. With Theofimo (Lopez) I feel that there is a little clash of styles, “Puello said when asked which of the two champions at 140 he would prefer to fight to Matias.
If Puello looks good to beat Matias, a unification against IBF champion Richardson Hitchins would be the logical clash to make next. It’s a good thing that Puello is fighting on Turki Alalshikh’s map on Saturday, because he will see him, and he may want to compile a unification with Hitchins or WBO champion Teofimo Lopez.
