PSV vs Sporting CP: Preview, Predictions & Lineups

A pair of champions face off in Eindhoven on Tuesday night as PSV Eindhoven take on Sporting CP in matchday two of the Champions League stage.

Both teams won their respective titles last season and both teams have started the domestic season with seven wins from seven matches. While Peter Bosz’s PSV remain the class of the Eredivisie, Ruben Amorim’s Sporting CP aim to hold off Lisbon rivals Benfica and a rejuvenated Porto.

The Portuguese side kicked off their Champions League campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win at Lille in Lisbon. They were helped by the first-half sending off of Angel Gomes, with Zeno Debast securing victory for the hosts with an outrageous strike just after the hour mark.

PSV, meanwhile, were knocked out in the round of 16 last season and were narrowly beaten by eventual finalists Borussia Dortmund. However, they were stifled by Thiago Motta’s stubborn Juventus on matchday one, struggling to lay a glove on the tough Italians in a 3-1 defeat.

They should be improved with Sporting coming to town.

Veteran Croatian full-back Ivan Perisic made his debut for PSV at Willem II at the weekend, but the new arrival is unlikely to keep his place in the team on Tuesday.

Johan Bakayoko and Luuk de Jong rested on Saturday with this game in mind.

Hirving Lozano is likely to miss out with a muscle injury, while Sergino Dest is a doubt with a knee problem. Noa Lang missed much of last season with a hamstring injury and Bosz is back in her place.

Expected line-up of PSV vs Sporting CP (4-3-3): Benítez; Mauro Junior, Flamingo, Boscagli, Dams; Schouten, Til, Veerman; Bakayoko, De Jong, Tillman.

Marcus Edwards

The Portuguese side have impressed without Pedro Goncalves and Marcus Edwards in recent weeks, with both players dealing with hamstring and thigh injuries respectively. Neither player is expected to return Tuesday night.

Jerry St Juste fails in defence, while Diogo Pinto is another injury doubt for Amorim’s men.

Viktor Gyokeres finally netted during Sporting’s 3-0 win at Estoril on Saturday, so the Swede will be keen to restore order in Eindhoven.

Sporting CP’s predicted line-up against PSV (3-4-3): Israel; Debast, Diomande, Inacio; Quenda, Morita, Hjulmand, Santos; Trincao, Gyokeres, Catamo.

This is one of the good games of the day and should be a treat to watch on Tuesday night.

Although these are two managers with different ideals, you always expect a bit of chaos when Peter Bosz is around. Sporting d’Amorim will try to control the competition with efficient preparation work and a sound press, but they are also the most destructive when they play vertically at pace.

It could be a space shelter in the Philips Stadion with artificial transitions created at will. Sporting may be the superior team, but PSV have a stellar home record and will be hard to beat on their patch.

Prediction: PSV 2-2 Sporting CP
