When English pro Daniel Brown hit one wrong shot during the final round of DP World Tour’s Andalucia Masters on Sunday, he surely couldn’t have expected to find his putt in such an unlikely place.
What exactly happened? There’s no footage of Brown’s ball in flight, but a laugh-out-loud video posted to X (formerly Twitter) shows what happened when Brown approached the landing zone and a release situation that left broadcasters somewhat lost for words. .
You have to see it to believe it, but Brown’s ball somehow ended up lodged between a fan’s backside and her chair on the 16th hole.
As Brown approaches the fan, the Sky Sports commentators engage in an amusing back and forth.
“Now where’s Dan Brown’s ball?” A broadcaster asks.
“It’s for a lady … well, it’s … look, I could be in all kinds of trouble here,” he says Wayne “Radar” Wiley.
“Careful, Radar,” replies the other transmitter.
“I won’t do it,” says Radar. “But it’s in a lady’s chair and it’s behind her back and at the end of the chair. And she’s sitting very, very still.”
“Play as you lie?” the other broadcaster jokes.
“No, no, this isn’t playing,” Radar replies.
“I’m still curious to see exactly where it is,” the other broadcasters say, as the camera zooms in on the fan, where you can see the ball wedged between her buttocks and the back of her chair.
“Oh, look at that!” another broadcaster calls out. “Isn’t that incredible!”
A rules official uses a tee to mark where the ball is suspended on the chair, then gives the woman the go ahead to stand up. The ball lands and Brown is able to make the play.
Although Brown was able to make the fall without a penalty, he ended up stripping and finished third in the tournament, two shots ahead of a playoff between France’s Julien Guerrier and Spain’s Jorge Campillo. Guerrier eventually prevailed with a par on the ninth playoff hole to record his first victory in 230 starts.
