Promising Leeds youngster Luca Thomas scores on debut for York City

Leeds United youngster Luca Thomas made a great start to life on loan at York City, making his debut at the weekend.

Thomas boasts an incredible record at youth level for Whites, with 35 goals and eight assists in 62 games for the Under-18s and Under-21s combined, including six goals and one assist in five Premier League 2 games start of this campaign.

However, the forward has yet to be rewarded with first-team opportunities, despite other youngsters such as James Debayo, Sam Chambers and Charlie Crew being included in several matchday squads.

At 20 years old, it seems like it’s now or never for Thomas to prove he can cut it with the Leeds senior team

Thomas is out of contract at the end of this season and could be using the rest of the campaign to attract potential suitors.

The youngster went on trial in York City earlier this week and impressed during his short time with the Minstermen.

“Leeds have let him train with us over the last few days so we can have a look at him and we’ve done that. We’re impressed with what we’ve seen and it’s up to us to have a chat with Tony, and then we’ll talk to Leeds about what he’s better,” said York manager Adam Hinshelwood (via Leeds United news).

“I’ve been really encouraged by what we’ve seen from him and hopefully something will come of it.”

Thomas impressed so much that he completed a loan move to York on Friday to help the club deal with a wave of injuries; a luxury granted to clubs outside the top four tiers of English football.

“I’m looking forward to a new challenge and gaining good experience at a big club,” Thomas said of the move (via Official City of York website).

And Thomas made the perfect start to his spell at Yorkshire neighbors Leeds, coming off the bench to score the last of York’s four goals in a 4-0 thrashing of Ebbsfleet.

The result leaves York third in the National League, just one point behind top-placed Barnet.

Leeds are ready to make a signing of their own outside the window with the former France international midfielder Joshua Guilavogui closed as a free agent.
