The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 The mega auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, offered a number of surprises, but it was the Indian auction that caused the biggest shock. Prithvi Shaw goes unsold. Shaw had been a part of the right-handed hitting Capitals of Delhi Having failed to attract any offers since 2018, Shaw’s former coach, Jawala Singhtalked about the reasons behind this decline.
Prithvi Shaw’s former coach shares his views on the declining trend in India
Jawal said Prithvi approached him for guidance in 2015 as he was yet to play in Mumbai U-16 matches. For three years, Jawal worked hard to develop Prithvi’s talent, which led to his success in the Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy and eventually Under-19 World Cup. Jawal recalled celebrating Prithvi’s birthday before the World Cup but expressed disappointment that they lost touch after 2017.
“Prithvi came to me in 2015 and was with me for three years. He had not played in Mumbai under-16 matches when he came and his father asked me to guide him. Then the next year, he played the U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy and scored big in the qualifying matches. And I worked hard on it. He was gifted from the start; I won’t take full credit because many coaches worked for him, but I was the only one at the time. I was excited when he played in the Under-19 World Cup because he was my first student. He celebrated his birthday with me before he left for the U-19 World Cup. But after that I did not see him; that was 2017, here we are in 2024; I have not seen him; he didn’t come to me” Jawal said in an interview with Shubhankar Mishra on his YouTube channel.

Comparison of the show with the current Indian cricket sensation
Jawala also emphasized that talent is just a beginning, like a seed, and turning it into success requires consistency that comes from lifestyle, work ethic and discipline. He noted that staying at the top in international cricket requires continuous development Sachin Tendulkar as an example of someone improving their skills, physical fitness and mental toughness. When players deviate from this process, they are weakened. However, he praised Yashasvi Jaiswal for his outstanding work ethic and dedication that set him apart.
“I think the process we call work ethic, so if you’re talented, talent is just a seed; Consistency is very important in that journey to make it into a tree and that consistency comes from your lifestyle, your work ethic and your discipline, so what I feel is that consistency is not with him. He can get off to a great start but always needs to improve his game to stay at the top in international cricket. Even Sachin Tendulkar consistently improved his game, refined his game and worked on his physical fitness and mental toughness. So I feel like a player is only derailed if they walk away from the process. If your process and work ethic is good, you won’t back down, so I feel players fail because of that. As for Yashavi, his work ethic is excellent; he works really hard and knows what to do. This is the main difference“, he added.
Shaw’s IPL form declined and he dropped out of international cricket
Shawn’s recent performances in the IPL paint a disturbing picture. In the IPL 2024 season, Shaw played just eight matches, managing just 198 runs, with a solitary half-century. This was only marginally better than his performance in 2023 when he scored 108 runs in the same number of matches, again with just one half-century – his lowest total in any IPL season for Shaw.
A dip in form is not limited to the IPL. Shaw has been out of international cricket since 2021, his last appearance being an ODI vs. Sri Lanka in July of that year. Shaw’s career trajectory, which left the Indian team and struggled in domestic cricket, has raised questions about his commitment and fitness.
