Captaining an IPL team is often described as one of the most demanding jobs in world cricket. The relentless pressure, the weight of franchise expectations and the unforgiving nature of the two-month tournament have broken many seasoned leaders. So when a captain manages to lift the trophy in his first season at the helm, it’s not only impressive but extraordinary.
Only four men have achieved this rare distinction in 18 editions of the Indian Premier League. Each came from a different background: one was a legendary spinner leading a group of underdogs, another was a young upstart who left the role halfway through, a third was a comeback king leading a brand new franchise, and the last was a hometown hero who ended the franchise’s 18-year wait. Their stories are as diverse as they are inspiring.
Here are the four players who conquered the IPL in their debut season as captain:
1. Shane Warne – Rajasthan Royals (2008)
When the IPL started in 2008, nobody gave Rajasthan Royals (RR) a chance. They were written off as the weakest team on paper – a squad of relatively unknown Indian players and a few overseas names. But what they had was legendary Australian leg-spinner Shane Warne, who was handed the captaincy in his first and only season as an IPL captain.
Warne did more than captain; he turned a bunch of underdogs into a completely cohesive, fearless unit. His leadership was a mixture of tactical genius and pure conviction. He famously gave young, budding players like Ravindra Jadeja, Yusuf Pathan and Swapnil Asnodkar the confidence to perform on the big stage. Warne himself picked up 19 wickets and led from the front, managing his bowling changes with his trademark intuition.
In the opposite final Chennai Super Kings (CSK)The Royals defended a modest 164, winning by three wickets. Warne’s captaincy that season remains one of the most famous failure stories in sports history and he remains the only captain to win the first edition of the IPL while leading the team in his debut season as captain.
2. Rohit Sharma – Mumbai Indians (2013)
Rohit Sharma’s elevation to captain Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2013 was more out of necessity than a long-term plan. Halfway through the season, with MI struggling, the franchise decided to replace Ricky Ponting with a young vice-captain. Rohit, then just 26, managed a team that never won an IPL title despite being one of the most star-studded sides.
It was followed by a master class in calm, restrained leadership. Rohit didn’t try to do anything crazy; it simply brought stability and clarity. He backed his players, used Lasith Malinga to devastating effect and made some crucial knocks himself – most notably a brilliant 60 to chase down 148 with ease in the final against CSK.
This victory marked the beginning of MI becoming the most successful franchise in IPL history. Rohit won four more titles with MI (2015, 2017, 2019, 2020), but his debut season as captain in 2013 set the template: he stepped into the thick of things, never looked back and lifted the trophy in his first attempt.
3. Hardik Pandya – Gujarat Titans (2022)
Hardik Pandya’s story in 2022 was one of the most remarkable comebacks in IPL history. After being released by Mumbai Indians after an injury-plagued season, he was named the captain of the newly formed Gujarat Titans (GT). The pressure was immense – not only to lead a new franchise, but also to prove his fitness and worth as an all-rounder after a long injury lay-off.
Hardik accepted the responsibility with exceptional maturity. He built a team culture of calmness under pressure, a philosophy that has become a hallmark of Gujarat. His own performances were outstanding: he scored 487 runs at a strike rate of 131.29 and picked up 8 wickets at medium pace, showing once again that he can be an all-rounder.

Under his leadership, the Titans made it to the league stage in their first season and defeated Rajasthan Royals in the final. Hardik became the third captain to win the IPL in his debut season as captain, and he did it with an expansion team – an all the more unusual feat given the franchise had no history to rely on.
4. Rajat Patidar – Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2025)
Rajat Patidar, the latest inductee into this exclusive club, delivered what many consider the most emotional tale of all.
After 18 years of heartache, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally broke their title drought in 2025, and they did so with a captain who had never led a side in the IPL before and started that very season as an uncertain player in the playing XI.
Patidar was named captain days before the start of the tournament after Faf du Plessis was injured. Few gave RCB a real chance; they had a history of failure in knockout games. But a hometown Patidar who had risen through the ranks brought a quiet, aggressive style of leadership. He led from the front with the bat, scoring more than 500 runs, and his tactical decisions – especially in the playoffs – were seen as bold and clear-headed.
The final against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad was legendary. Patidar marshalled his bowlers perfectly and anchored the chase to secure RCB’s maiden IPL title with the bat. His achievement stands out not only because he did it in his first season as captain, but also because in doing so he ended the longest trophy drought in IPL history.
