Player scores as Jimenez’s double penalty saves the point

A rain-soaked Craven Cottage witnessed a thrilling 2-2 draw between Fulham and Premier League new boys Ipswich Town.

The Tractor Boys were pressed back into their own half by a spirited home side in the early exchanges but always looked capable on the counter attack. That threat materialized in the first goal when Calvin Bassey’s horrendous clearance, which followed Ben Johnson’s header off the crossbar, fell at the feet of Sammie Szmodics, the former Blackburn Rovers star who shoot past Bernd Leno from close range.

Fulham felt Leif Davis should have seen red for a foul on Harry Wilson before half-time, a decision which left Marco Silva fuming on the touchline, with the latter falling victim to Sam Morsy’s trip at close range more than 20 minutes from the end.

VAR advised referee Darren Bond to review his no-penalty decision, allowing Raúl Jiménez to level the scores from 12 yards. A few minutes later, Ipswich had a shot of his own when Timothy Castagne brought down Liam Delap, and the in-form striker smashed his effort into the corner of Leno’s net.

Substitute Jack Clarke rattled the post as Ipswich pushed to put the game beyond doubt but conceded another dying penalty when Davis’ back leg brought Jimenez down. The Mexican once again calmly converted and sent goalkeeper Christian Walton the wrong way when his effort went into the top corner.

Fulham remain ninth in the table, while Ipswich remain in the bottom three on goal difference.
