Player Ratings FA Cup Holders Win Penalty Thriller

Altay Bayindir was the hero as Manchester United beat Arsenal 5-3 on penalties after a thrilling FA Cup third round tie at the Emirates Stadium.

A thrilling game in north London ended 1-1 after 120 minutes of frantic action, which saw United take an early second-half lead through Bruno Fernandes before being pulled back by Gabriel’s equalizer Magellan

Diogo Dalot was sent off after receiving two quick bookings, putting United under unnecessary stress and duress, and his departure was the catalyst for Bayindir to produce a wonderful display in the closing stages of the game.

Fernandes’ goal was a wonderful first-time effort that fell into the corner of David Raya’s goal – the Portuguese benefiting from good work from Alejandro Garnacho.

Dalot were barely out of contention before Gabriel Magalhaes leveled proceedings with a deflected finish, before Martin Odegaard missed a penalty to arsenal – Bayindir coming down to his left to deny the Norwegian.

Chances were spurned by Kai Havertz and Declan Rice before the game went into extra time, but although the home side pressed for a winner, looking to build on their numerical advantage, they were unable to break down a spirited and obstinate united.

Havertz was denied in the shoot-out, with United converting all five of their kicks to earn a famous victory and a place in the fourth round.
