Player ratings as Magpies condemn Red Devils to fourth straight defeat

Newcastle heaped misery on Ruben Amorim and Manchester United as they condemned the Red Devils to a fourth straight defeat on Monday night.

The signs were ominous from the outset as Newcastle instantly asserted themselves in the game and took no more than three minutes to open the scoring. Alexander Isak scored for a sixth successive Premier League game when he headed in an unchallenged Lewis Hall cross.

The visitors’ midfield has become arguably the best in the division, and United’s aging pivot had no answers. Newcastle were absolutely dominant, and Isak missed a great chance to double their lead before Joelinton made it clear on 19 minutes.

Joshua Zirkzee’s withdrawal after 30 minutes was a stark indictment of United’s woeful display (and Amorim’s strange team selection), but the hosts had a couple of glimmers towards the end of the first part. Rasmus Hojlund and Casemiro spurned good chances to bring the Red Devils back into the game from scratch.

There was more composure in the second period as United finally settled into the contest and saw more of Martin Dubravka’s goal. Harry Maguire hit the post and Matthijs de Ligt had an effort blocked in the same sequence before substitute Leny Yoro headed wide from Christian Eriksen’s corner.

Despite the surge, Newcastle were able to keep the Red Devils at bay and they were able to hold on relatively comfortably for a rare league win at Old Trafford, only their third since 1972.

Chelsea defeat at Ipswich it means Eddie Howe’s side are just three points behind the fourth-placed Blues.
