Pirates, Red Sox swap pitchers Trade

Major League Baseball’s offseason is filled with big players changing teams via trade or free agency.

Some of the big moves include Juan Soto signing with the New York Mets, Corbin Burns signing with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Blake Snell signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Along with free agents signing with new teams, several trades have been completed, including outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros to the Chicago Cubs.

Another trade involving lesser-known players was recently announced.

“Pittsburgh Pirates acquire right-hander Chase Shugart in trade with Boston Red Sox for right-hander Matt McShane, sources familiar with the deal say. Shugart was recently designated for assignment by the Red Sox,” wrote FanSided’s Robert Murray X in

Shugart is a 28-year-old who made his MLB debut with the Red Sox in 2024.

He appeared in six games and had a 4.15 ERA with 8 strikeouts in 8.2 innings.

McShane is a 22-year-old who has yet to make his MLB debut.

For St. Joseph’s University in 2024, McShane appeared in 20 games and went 5-2 with a 3.95 ERA, two saves and 57 strikeouts in 43.1 innings.

The Red Sox are looking to dethrone the New York Yankees for the AL East crown in 2025, and they could use all the help they can get.

Shugart will join one of MLB’s top pitchers, Paul Skeness, as the Pirates look for their first playoff appearance since 2015.
