Former NFL star and Hall of Famer Peyton Manning is a sports legend. Full stop. He earned his status as an elite quarterback on the gridiron, but the two-time Super Bowl champion is also a golfer.
You just won’t recognize one of his swings this week BMW Championship Pro-Am, where Manning opened the event in disastrous, if hilarious, fashion.
Even before he retired with a Super Bowl trophy in his hands, Manning was a PGA Tour pro-am regular. He has also made an appearance on one of the events of “The Match,” the made-for-TV golf exhibition that pits star athletes and professional players against each other.
Manning’s handicap reportedly bounces around the single digitswith its index going up to 4.0.
To reach those heights as a golfer, you have to know how to find the fairway off the tee, something Manning excels at…usually. That was not the case at Castle Pines Golf Club on Wednesday.
Placed on the first team pitch, Manning was surrounded by fans eager to see how good his game was. Ever the entertainer, Manning gave his supporters a show, but not the one they were surely expecting.
Manning slipped his ball and then quickly dropped one hand from the driver’s grip in the fairway, a classic sign of a poor shot. And it was. With dozens of fans watching closely, Manning completed his drive and sent it under the short caution and drove away.
Check out the shot below.
An awkward silence initially covered the area around the shirt, but the star quarterback quickly lightened the mood with a joke.
“Does anyone see where he went?”
The one-liner prompted a roar of laughter from the fans who witnessed it, and as Manning began to walk away from the tee, they added a joke of their own, joining in a loud chant of “one of us” in a nice shot. in Manning.
With the pro-am over, Manning will have to sit back and watch as the top 50 players on the PGA Tour give it their all to claim the $4 million prize, hopefully without any top competition.
