Paras Mhambrey blames IPL for Umran Malik’s sudden decline from meteoric rise

India’s fast bowling sensation Umran Malik He grabbed the limelight with his fiery pace in the 2022 IPL season for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), but his career is currently under a cloud, struggling to make an impact with the ball, leading to his exclusion from the national team.

Bursting onto the scene with his ability to consistently hit 150 kmph, Malik quickly earned a place in India’s white-ball team in 2022 after a remarkable run. IPL season with SRH. In a short span, the Jammu and Kashmir pacer scored 24 international wickets, featuring in 10 ODIs and 8 T20Is.

Paras Mhambrey blames lack of red ball cricket for Umran Malik’s decline.

However, despite this promising start, Malik remained on the sidelines Indian cricket team for more than a year, it has led to concerns about his career, with many wondering if the fast bowler’s meteoric rise was followed by an equally rapid decline as SRH also discredited him.

Former Indian bowling coach reacts to Malik breaking expectations Paras Mhambrey said that the youngster came to the international arena without playing enough red-ball cricket and therefore suddenly lost his allure with the ball for both India and SRH in the IPL.

“The Indian Express” publication Mhambreyi said: “Umran is a classic case of someone not playing enough red ball cricket. He started scoring through the IPL. That means 24 balls in one game. Sometimes you don’t even get 24 balls. The amount of pressure on the 24 ball in bowling is not the same as the red ball. I think this (T20) is not the format to judge a prospect.”

Mhambrey believes that Malik’s rapid rise through the ranks, fueled primarily by his IPL performances, could lead to key developmental milestones in domestic cricket integral to continued success at the international level.

With just 12 First-Class matches to his name, Malik has limited experience in the longer formats and this lack of exposure hampers his ability to adapt and thrive in the rigors of international cricket.

Mhambrey emphasizes the need for red ball development for Malik

The former bowling coach admitted that the IPL is a great platform to showcase raw talent, but it does not fully prepare a bowler for the demands of Test cricket. Mhambrey further noted that “For all the advantages that come with bowling in the IPL, it has its implications.”

Mhambrey also highlighted the importance of red-ball cricket in the development of bowlers, saying the format offers players a true test of skill, stamina and mental toughness. The challenges faced during long sessions in first-class cricket, where bowlers are pushed to their limits, are essential to understanding and improving their craft.

According to the former Indian bowling coach, Malik’s limited exposure to first-class cricket is likely to have contributed to his current struggles as he has yet to develop the stamina needed to continue performing across formats.

Mhambrey signed off by saying: “We made sure he plays Ranji Trophy and red ball cricket. Once you play a season, you understand your bowling. Physically, you will be tested at different stages of the game.

Sometimes you will have to stay on the floor for six sessions. And when the final session comes, you will be physically and mentally challenged to bowl with that intensity. And you have to get over it.”
