Vergil Ortiz Jr. reminded Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis on social media today that he hasn’t fought him in the past.
Boots demands a straight answer
Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs) showed he wasn’t interested in playing Vergil’s matches and clearly asked if they were going to fight or not. He had no intention of defeating WBC interim junior middleweight champion Ortiz Jr. (24-0, 22 KOs) endlessly circulating on social media.

“Okay, so either 1. You said no twice. Or 2. You let someone say no to you twice. Which one is it?” Vergil Ortiz Jr. told Ennis X.
Why Ortiz Jr. keep looking back
For Vergil Jr to revisit the past is a sign that he is not interested in fighting Ennis and is looking for an excuse not to fight him.
Fans call Vergil’s Deflection
Fans saw Ortiz’s body language when Ennis challenged him after his recent fight against Erickson Lubin on November 8, which showed that he didn’t want to face him. If there was any doubt that Vergil Jr. wants nothing to do with ‘Boot’, his mention of Jermell Charlo and Errol Spence as possible next opponents made that immediately clear. He doesn’t want to fight with Ennis.
Vergil Jr’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, was even more transparent in his disinterest in the Ennis fight. In the press conference after the Lubin fight, De La Hoya had this to say about a fight against Ennis:
“The one thing about the Boots Ennis fight, yes, we’ll discuss it—absolutely. And I’ll get the best terms, as long as they are favorable to us, because (Vergil Jr) is the man. They chase him. Vergil Ortiz is the champion… We obviously have the upper hand because he (Ortiz Jr) is the better man.”
Does this sound like a promoter that Ortiz Jr. vs. Ennis wants to fight? It’s a brush language, to let ‘Boots’ and Matchroom know he’s not interested.
