For the first time, Livi players will have a direct way to play in the open championship, announced R&A on Monday, joining the similar USA Open attitude in the clearest acceptance of the governing bodies of Liv Golf in the three years of its existence.
R&A has created a new category in its exclusively open exceptions to Liv, where the highest rank player is not excluded, but within the five best of Livi’s individual ranking in late June, will be given a place in The open. This is followed by USGA decision last weekwhere the highest rank player in Liv is not already excluded and in the first three points (from May 19) will be given the US access to Oakmont.
Decision is one of the first essential movements of CEO of entry R&A Mark Darbon The mandate as Head of the International Governing Body. Darbon took over the position from Martin Slumbers in early 2025 and offered a similar explanation to what Slumbers said in previous years, saying that R&A examines its categories of exclusion each year and makes changes to them as needed.
“We admit that players competing in Liv Golf should also have the opportunity to provide open places through the order of the individual season as well as existing trails,” he said.

From the existing roads, it means the qualification, which has been prevalent (if only) that the players not excluded from the LIV had to gain entry in previous years. R&A allows exceptions to the final qualification for the past champions and any player ranking to the 1,000 best world golf ranking, which means that most player players should at least progress to the final qualification, from which A successful day with 36 holes will take them Royal in July.
Of course, this action and similar decision of the USA has satisfied new Liv Scott O’Neill CEO.
“Gratitude that competitors from Liv Golf League and the international series will have the opportunity to play Golf Major Major is a real testament to the field strength and R&A commitment to golf fans all over the world,” O’Neill said in a statement.
Although the measure is an important step for the relationship between the main organizations in the game, the way it plays in reality may not lead to a new game of play for a non -excluded player. To use last season as an example, the five main conclusors in Liv – Jon Rahm, Joaquin Niemann, Sergio Garcia, Tyrrell Hatton and Brooks Koepka – contains four qualified players. Only Garcia would have won this exception of Livi, and it is possible that he would not have put himself in Top 5 until the season after his victory at the Liv event in Spain.
In other words, if Livi’s best players play their best – and are already excluded in the open and open – these exceptions will leave no room for anyone else to win the entrance. Let it be an early opinion that Adrian Merronk work through. Pro Polish is not excluded in any of the two main championships of the season, and is currently the leader of Livi’s individual ranking after his victory at the season’s opening event in Saudi Arabia. Now he just has to keep himself next to this position for the next three months.
Despite the formality of these great exceptions to the championship, Liv has been taken into account by two other major championships in recent years. Joaquin Niemann received invitations for both the masters and the PGA Championship while Garcia received an invitation to the latter (as he was already qualified for the first as a result of his 2017 victory). Talor Gooch, Paul Casey and Patrick Reed all accepted invitations to the PGA Championship in recent years. Louis Oosthuizen also received an invitation to the PGA 2024 championship, but did not accept it because of personal commitments.
