Brian Norman Jr. contrasted his son’s mindset, calling him a “cold-blooded, calculating killer” in the ring, compared to Devin Haney, whom he labeled a “p***y” who runs and “grabs and holds.”
Norman Sr. saying that Devin’s father, Bill Haney, raised a “p***y.” He mentions Haney’s fight with Jorge Linares, in which he held a lot when he was hurt.
Norman’s cold instinct
“Brian Norman is a cold, calculated killer. He has no emotions,” Brian Norman Sr. said MillCity Boxing about his son, Brian Jr. “He’s not afraid to get hit. When Devin Haney gets in trouble, does he hang on for dear life? We’ve seen it. That’s who he is. Brian Norman doesn’t. He stands and fights.”
Few fans would argue that Norman jr. is not a “cold, calculated killer”. This has always been his style of fighting. He tries to destroy his opponents without worry. He is a classic example of an emotional soldier.
Haney was forced to hold to survive in his fights against Ryan Garcia and Jorge Linares. Without the slamming he did in those fights, he probably would have been knocked out.
Raised a killer
“One of us, between me and Bill Haney, raised ap***y in the ring. One of us raised a murderer in the ring. When he (Haney) gets in the ring, he’s ap***y. He ran from (Jose) Ramirez. He held and grabbed (Jorge) Linares. Devin Haney sued to get a loss off his record. They’re trying desperately to keep that O,” Norman Sr. said.
Devin is not a puncher, and he never will be. He is what you call a ‘finesse fighter’ with a punch, move and hold style. It is essentially a watered down version of the old style that Floyd Mayweather Jr. used during his career, when he still had mobility.
Landing has been a big part of Haney’s game since the Linares fight on May 29, 2021. Devin was hurt in round 10 by a right hand followed by a right-left combination. For the remainder of the 12-round fight, Haney held steady.
Ryan showed the way
Norman Jr. is going to have to come up with a strategy to deal with the incessant clinching that Haney is doing for him to get his shots off on November 22nd. Ryan Garcia took advantage of Haney’s hold by scoring him with short left hooks when he reached out to grab him. That’s how he repeatedly hurt him.
If Devin had stopped holding on, he would have been better off after initially being long-jumped in the first round. He failed to do so. Constant holds became too ingrained in Haney’s style for him to adapt in that fight. With his last fight against Jose Ramirez on May 2, 2025, he still uses that tactic as a method to neutralize his opponent’s offense.
Bill fell silent
“When he’s flat on that canvas, his daddy is going to stand there with his d***k in his hand. I think that’s why Bill doesn’t talk so much. He learned from it,” Norman Sr. said of Bill learning his lesson from all the trash talk and predictions he made leading up to Devin’s fight against Ryan Garcia on April 20, 2024.
Before Haney’s mega-fight against Ryan last April, Bill made outrageous predictions. One of them was, “I’m sending Devin over there to literally kill him.” It didn’t work out well for Haney, as he was dropped three times by Kingry in a 12-round majority decision. The fight could have ended in round seven when Devin was on his feet after being dropped by a left hook from Ryan.
The referee stopped the action and penalized Garcia for striking on the break. There was no warning given before the point deduction. That short time may have saved Haney from being finished by Ryan.
