You may have noticed that more and more tour pros are using broom insert these days. But this gear trend isn’t just helping elite golfers sink their clutch shots. These super long putters can also help players like you develop a smooth and reliable stroke.
According to GOLF Top 100 Alumni Scott Munroe, broomsThe Tick putter is more than just a reliable player – it’s also an effective training aid. The reason it’s such a powerful tool, says Munroe, is that it eliminates the hands from hitting.
“What it does is it makes you shake your shoulders, taking your hands out (of the movement),” Munroe said. “It’s a great way to calibrate your distances and get used to seeing the ball roll perfectly.”
The key is the extended shaft. Because squat machines have a higher pivot point in the body, they naturally encourage you to move the tire with your larger muscles—rather than the small, wobbly muscles in your hands and wrists. This results in a more pendulum-like stroke that is consistent and much less sensitive to nerves.
Bring your elbows up to mimic that broomstick feel
Don’t have access to a broom? Don’t worry. Munroe says there’s a simple way to recreate the feel and effect of a broomstick field:
Step 1. Place your hands: Place your hands on the club with your fingers under the grip.
Step 2. Create a pentagon: Hold the camera up in front of you. This should make your arms form a pentagon.
Step 3. Bring your elbows together: Pull your elbows so they touch your torso.
Now, place the putter back on the ground and stand up as if you are going to hit a putt. Starting with the practice swing, start moving the club back and through, focusing on using your larger muscles.
“What you’re doing is recreating the long shooter,” he said. “From this position, all you’re doing is moving your shoulders. That’s going to help you make really good shots.”
Once you feel comfortable with this pendulum-like movement, you can start incorporating a ball into your practice. Pay attention to how the ball rolls while using the Munroe drill. If you’re doing it right and using those bigger muscles, the ball should roll from end to end every time.
Even if you’ve never considered adding one to your bag, practicing with a broomstick—or mimicking it with the Munroe elbow drill—could be the key to unlocking better mechanics and making your shots come true, especially under pressure.
