1976–Cal. Northridge State’s Julie Brown, competing in a race that served as a qualifier for the AIAW X-Country Championships (precursor to the NCAA Championships), ran 16:14.0 on the 5,000-meter home track, breaking Ian Merrill’s 6-month American record of 16.26. Brown went on to win the AIAW XC title two weeks later.
