Bill Haney posted a clip of his son Devin Haney working out and fending off repeated slow left hooks from a trainer in what appears to be preparation for a rematch with Ryan Garcia in 2025. Dad Haney said, “No secret what time we go on,” which is a cryptic comment about them sneaking away and preparing for the second clash.
Haney’s Kryptonite
The left hook that Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) used repeatedly to drop Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) was kryptonite in their April 20th showdown at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Bill doesn’t say if Devin will do a tune-up before facing Kingry again, but it would make sense.
Haney, 26, has already been out of the ring for seven months, and he can’t afford to lose out on all that cash he could earn in a warm-up fight before facing Ryan again.
He needs to get back into action, win back fans and show he’s not mentally broken after what he went through in his three-knockout, 12-round majority decision loss to Kingry.
More importantly, Haney must stay sharp to have his best chance at avenging his loss. Garcia takes on a tough Japanese fighter, Rukiya Anpo, on December 30, and that bout will help him prepare for a second fight with Devin.
Ryan kicked Haney’s backside all around the ring last April and made it look so easy. The sad thing was that Devin didn’t make any adjustments to take away the left hook from Ryan, and it wouldn’t have been hard to do.
Neutralizing the left hook
- Stop concluding: Ryan caught Devin with his left hook trying to clinch and never stopped doing it. He didn’t have to come looking for Haney because he was right there every time. This area is what Haney struggled with.
- Hold up his right hand: Haney could have blocked Ryan’s left hooks if he had been on guard, but he didn’t. He was sloppy.
- Stay on the outside. If Devin is on the outside, Ryan won’t be able to land his bread-and-butter shot and will be eating japs all night.
