‘No is a powerful thing’

Few players saw the same kind of meteoric rise in profile as Joel Dahmen made of Netflix’s PGA Tour documentary series “Full Swin.”

Before the show, Dahmen was a PGA Tour major with an engaging personality and a similar story of overcoming adversity. The show on Netflix’s first PGA Tour documentary series took that story and broadcast it to the masses.

Dahmen’s show has taken a hit in the two years since Netlfix released the first season of Full Swinggrowing last month when Dahmen nearly lost his full-time status on the PGA Tour, retiring a dramatic final round of 64 at the RSM Classic to sneak into the Top 125 rankings.

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Subpar, Dahmen explained some of the challenges he has personally faced with his newfound fame.

“I would say the first year of Netflix, so last year was the hardest year to manage time because you have so many opportunities coming at you,” Dahmen told Subpar co-hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz. “And it’s easy to say yes to everything, because the new opportunities that come mean more money, it means more wonderful things, meeting new people. All these opportunities are coming at you and I didn’t do very well because I also had my baby three weeks before Netflix, the first season came out. So this was all new, everything is coming new to you. And I don’t think I handled it as well as I could have.”

But like most golfers who have accomplished enough to earn their PGA Tour card, let alone win like Dahmen, he figured out how to adapt. He hired renowned sports psychologist and performance coach Chris Bertram to help him learn simply how to ask for help.

He said he didn’t deal with it enough at the beginning of the year, which is why he found himself on the verge of losing his card, but he feels in a better position now, which explains how he fought in the last round in Georgia to keep his card.

“Saying no is a powerful thing. Now I’m in a position where I can say no. And that’s a really cool thing,” Dahmen said. “And you just say yes to things that you really want to do and are passionate about. And with my great partners, I can say yes to more of these things instead of spending a lot of time on a lot of other things. So I’m, I’m excited for what’s to come.”
