Next-Gen Champion: Keyshawn Davis’s title victory

On Valentine’s Day in the Theater in Madison Square Garden, Keyshawn Davis (13-0, 9 KO, 1 AD) earned a gift he worked for his entire life: World Championships Gold. A few weeks before his 26th birthday, Davis won the WBO Lightweight Championship by beating the previously unbeaten Denys Berinchyk (19-1, 9 KO) in the fourth round.

When Davis landed on the body in round four four, Berinchyk could not defeat the teen’s ten score. The knockout came at the 1:45 point of the fourth round. Davis previously knocked down Berinchyk with a body shot in the third round.

Keyshawn Davis won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. He debuted professionally in February 2021 on the bottom map of a Canelo álvarez fight. Four years later, Davis shows the skills that many people have used as a future champion when he came up by the amateur ranks.

After the fight, Bob Arum, chairman of the top rankings, called Keyshawn Davis a startling young fighter. Arum added: “You saw the future of boxing here in New York tonight.”

Even when a 6-to-1 nundog came into battle, Denis Berinchyk was no tomato can. The 35-year-old Ukranian is a talented fighter who won the championship by defeating world champion Emmanuel Navarette last year. But Keyshawn Davis overwhelmed Bernchyk. Davis’ combination of speed, technique and precision -punch was too much for Berinchyk.

Keyshawn Davis became the first boxer of Norfolk, Virginia, to have won a world championship since the Hall of Famer Perrnell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker. And Keyshawn is one of three Davis brothers who are pro -boxers.

The oldest of the three, Kelvin, 28, is a South Poot in the Welterweight section. Keon, 23, the youngest of the three brothers, made his professional debut in November and achieved his second victory in so many battles on Friday on his brother’s bottom map. Keon, who stands on a brilliant 6 feet 3 inches long, fought against a 150 -pound catch. In an interview with ESPN Mark Kriegel last year, Keyshawn said he always told Keon that he had the potential to be the best fighter out of the three.

Keyshawn Davis is now one of four champions in an interesting lightweight section. Vasiliy Lomachenko is holding the IBF Championship, Gerrvonta “Tank” Davis has the WBA championship, and Shakur Stevenson has the WBC Championship (William Zepeda has an interim version of the WBC Lightweight Championship).

So what comes next for the new champion? Davis called out Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz and Gervonta Davis. Other matches that can make sense to Keyshawn Davis are Vasily Lomachenko or William Zepeda.

Some consider Cuban Andy Cruz as the skeleton in Keyshawn Davis’ closet. Cruz defeated Davis four times in the amateur ranks, including in the gold medal match at the recent Tokyo Olympics. Amateur and professional box are different animals, but beating someone four times strikes someone four times. Davis against Cruz could be a fight for a few years from the road after Cruz settles in the pro ranks.

Davis practices with Brian “Bomac” McIntyre, who also trains Terence Crawford and Shakur Stevenson, among others. Keyshawn earns the expectations that many observers have had for his career. Getting all the qualities to become a superstar is one thing; It is another to put it together and bring about the potential in results.

An interesting wrinkle on Keyshawn Davis’s path to unite the lightweight division is his relationship with the 135-pound fellow champion and Stablemate Shakur Stevenson. Davis has never entertained a potential battle between himself and Shakur Stevenson. Davis told Talksport: “No, I will never fight against him. It’s definitely deeper. His mother is constantly making me disappear. I’m about to save his brother today, I know his whole family. I even know his sisters. I have known Shakur almost all his life. I know his cousins. I know his whole family, so it’s not even about Shakur. “It is admirable that Davis even admits at a young age that some things are more important than boxing.

Whatever the following for Keyhawn Davis, he will be a force to calculate for years in boxing.
