Newcastle vs Liverpool: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

After capping a momentous week with a 2-0 win over Manchester City, Liverpool face Newcastle United away in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

Arne Slot’s train continues to roll on Merseyside, with the Reds extending their lead at the top of the division to nine points on Sunday after defeating the fallen perennial champions at Anfield.

Slot’s chameleon Liverpool displayed several iterations of his brilliance in Sunday’s win just days after thoroughly outclassed Champions League champions Real Madrid by the same marker.

There was stunning drama the last time these two sides met at St James’ Park, with Darwin Nunez struck late to secure all three points for the ten-man Reds. Newcastle, as was the case last season, have struggled for consistency this season, but unlike in 2023/24, they cannot blame a catastrophic injury crisis for their indifference this season.

Eddie Howe’s side have beaten Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Chelsea at home this season but have only picked up a point from their previous two games against West Ham United and Crystal Palace.

here it is 90 minutes guide to Wednesday’s clash on Tyneside.

Alexander Isak suffered another injury scare at the weekend when he was forced off at Selhurst Park. Howe confirmed that the striker suffered a “contact injury” rather than a muscle strain which increases the likelihood that he will feature on Wednesday, but Isak is nevertheless a doubt.

Joe Willock and Joelinton also picked up knocks on Saturday, but the latter completed the contest and should be fine to start. Liverpool.

The Magpies will certainly be without Emil Krafth due to a broken collarbone. Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman are long-term absentees.

Predicted Newcastle vs Liverpool line-up (4-3-3): Pope; Delivery, Schar, Burn, Hall; Guimaraes, Joelinton, Tonali; Gordon, Isaac, Barnes.

Arne Slot confirmed on Sunday Defensive duo Conor Bradley and Ibrahima Konate will miss the next few weeks after the pair were injured during the Reds’ 2-0 win Real Madrid.

However, the Dutchman can now call on Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, while Joe Gomez performed superbly against Man City.

Kostas Tsimikas remains on the sidelines for the visitors, although the Greece international is not expected to miss too much time with his current ankle injury. Alisson, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa are absent.

Liverpool predicted line-up against Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Jones; Salah, Szoboszlai, Gakpo; Núñez

After last week’s highs, Liverpool must be wary of a potential banana skin event on Wednesday. Newcastle have shown they can compete with the division’s best at home and St James’ Park will bounce back for the visit of the league leaders under the lights.

However, they need a fit Isak to give themselves the best chance of taking points away from the imperious Slot Reds.

The visitors may have to endure difficult spells in midweek, but Slot’s side have shown their ability this season to pick up wins when the going gets tough.

Prediction: Newcastle 1-2 Liverpool
