Anthony Gordon missed last weekend’s trip to Stamford Bridge through injury but started against the Blues on Wednesday evening. He played for 73 minutes, while Lewis Miley also returned from a long-term injury in the closing stages of the win.
The less encouraging news is that Alexander Isak limped off in the second half of the midweek win after opening the scoring, although Eddie Howe was optimistic about his problem. Winger Jacob Murphy missed the Chelsea clash entirely with a hamstring problem, but Howe insisted it was “nothing serious”.
Newcastle they are still without a handful of defenders, with Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles and Kieran Trippier missing due to fitness issues.
