The Washington Nationals missed the postseason for the fifth straight season after finishing with a 71-91 record and fourth place in the National League East.
After winning the World Series in 2019, the Nationals failed to return to the playoffs and lost every season since.
The Nationals added several players last season, including first baseman Nathaniel Lowe in a trade with the Texas Rangers and first baseman Josh Bell via free agency.
With several new offensive players joining the team in 2025, the Nationals also bring back one of their veteran pitchers.
According to MLB Network’s “X,” the Nationals and right-handed pitcher Trevor Williams have agreed to terms on a two-year contract.

Williams is a nine-year veteran MLB pitcher who entered the league in 2016 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and has played for four different teams.
Williams started 13 games with the Nationals in 2024 and posted a 6-1 record with a 2.03 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 66.2 innings.
The 32-year-old pitcher is coming off a career-best ERA of 2.03 and will remain in the Nationals organization for the next two seasons.
Although the Nationals won the World Series in 2019, they haven’t won an NL East title since 2017.
With the likes of the Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets and Atlanta Braves in their division, the Nationals will likely need more talent if they want to contend for the division title.
The Nationals will look for their first winning season since 2019 as they prepare for the 2025 season.
