I love summer golf. You can’t beat showing up for an ultra-mzg round knowing with 100 percent confidence that you’ll actually have 18 holes before dark. Beyond the extended daylight hours, there are many reasons to love the warm weather. The ball flies further, the grass is greener and, for many of us, this is the only time of year we can take the field with any consistency. Continuous play means more repetitions and more repetitions means better results. Ironically, the only downside to golf in the dog days of summer is the heat.
My favorite summer golf gear is lightweight, easy to carry and keeps me cool. Getting warm can be a challenge, but as someone who has played golf in temperatures that can exceed 100F for almost 30 years, I have some ideas about what gear can make a mid-summer round tolerable, even comfortable. .
There are dozens of recommendations I could make, but to keep you stuck for the next hour, I’ve narrowed it down to the 11 pieces of gear I’ve relied on the most this summer. Let us know in the comments what you use to get rid of the heat.
Getting ready to end the summer on a high note
Flower – Tech Zip Polo
There are a lot of great lightweight and tech polos out there, but I’ve really been loving this one from Fiori. The material is super soft and silky, feels great on my skin when it’s bone dry or sweaty, has a comfortable collar that stays put and can be worn with the collar open or closed, depending on how you want it how i feel
adidas – Wide Brim Golf Hat
Joel Dahmen isn’t the only golfer who can rock a big bucket hat. The sun is constantly in your eyes while playing summer golf, but it’s also ravaging your neck and ears with UV rays, so a bucket hat is an ideal antidote. To go along with ample sun protection, this hat from adidas uses the brand’s AEROREADY material that wicks away moisture, keeping you dry and cool when the sweat really starts to pour.
47 brands – BRRR Fairway 47 Trucker
If you are a sports fan, you need a golf hat from 47 Brand. My favorite is the trucker style cap, but “dad cap” enthusiasts will find plenty of options for them as well. The BRRR material is lightweight and, in my experience, always dries quickly, which is a huge benefit on hotter days. I prefer the white ones, as they don’t absorb as much heat, but the material is so light that I’d definitely recommend whichever style you’re interested in.
fans – Crit Sunglasses
The Tifosi is a great choice for anyone who wants an affordable pair of sunglasses, but just because they’re lighter on the wallet doesn’t mean they can’t perform in the most intense conditions. The brand’s golf lenses are ideal for a variety of light conditions, so you’ll be able to rock them at noon just as easily as at 6 p.m. I also love how light they are, which actually makes a big difference when it’s hot.
lululemon – ABC Classic-Fit WovenAir Shorts
A pair of lightweight shorts cannot be overlooked. The lululemon ABC line is one of my favorites when it comes to golf pants, but they also have some pretty stellar summer shorts. In particular, I like the WovenAir model which wraps nicely, doesn’t bunch up in the crotch or around the waist, and keeps airflow at its best whether you’re golfing in the hot West Coast desert or the blustery Northeast.
Mission – Cooling towel
When things heat up, almost nothing offers more relief than a cool towel, whether you’re wrapping it around your neck, wiping your sweaty arms and hands, or giving your face a quick cooldown. However, the Mission Cooling towel is more than just a regular old towel. It can stay cool for up to two hours (no chemicals), offers UPF 50 sun protection and can cool down to 30 degrees below body temperature in just minutes.
Under Armor – Ghost shoes
Hot days on the golf course will make your legs and feet feel extra tired and lethargic. However, your shoes can go a long way in easing that burden. For that, I like the Under Armor Phantom shoes. They’re lightweight and comfortable, but really shine in the heat thanks to the mesh upper and SpeedForm® 2.0 sockliner, giving your feet room to breathe during long days on the course.
hydro flask – Wide mouth water bottle
Don’t forget to drink water (those two cans of Coors Light aren’t enough). A Hydro Flask water bottle is constantly in my bag, ready for a refill whenever I pass those precious orange water containers every few holes. It adds a bit of weight to my bag, but the insulated bottle is worth it, thanks to its ability to keep water cold for an entire round.
holder – Umbrella tour with double canopy
Umbrellas aren’t just for the rain, they’re great for the sun too. If you like to walk the course, whether you’re carrying your bag or pushing a stroller, an umbrella can save the day when the summer heat is at its peak. The sun has the ability to completely drain your energy, so even a few minutes of shade between shots is better than nothing, allowing you to perform at your best for an entire round.
Swiftwick – ASPIRE Zero Tab socks
Shoes are important, but sweat-wicking performance socks can be even more valuable on a hot summer afternoon. My favorites in all seasons, but especially in summer, are Swiftwick’s ASPIRE Zero. The heel tab keeps them from slipping into my shoe, the short length allows my feet to breathe, and most importantly, they prevent blisters and cracking.
FootJoy – HyperFLX Golf Gloves
On a hot day, you may find that your golf glove gets just as wet as it does on a rainy day. Sweat, condensation from your water bottle, constantly reaching for the wet towel – all these things make your glove soaked in no time. The HyperFLX glove stays drier than a regular golf glove, thanks to its mesh material. However, don’t think you’re shrinking. The palm is still made of premium Cabretta leather.
