One of the best things about writing for MyGolfSpy is the opportunity to try lots of new things, whether it’s equipment, clothing or accessories, and then tell you about it. It’s a responsibility we take seriously, and we hope we’ve developed enough trust with you that our opinions count.
That said, every year there are studs and there are duds. Listed here are five studs that have helped my game, my outfits, or my overall sense of well-being.
Let’s have some fun.
Almost anything from The original penguin

If there is a phrase that aptly describes Original clothing for Penguinit’s “retro cool”. I can also humbly submit that the phrase also aptly describes yours truly. At the very least, Original Penguin is one of the few clothing brands that has made my wife say, “You know, you don’t look half-assed in this.”
I know deep down what she means retro cool.
The original penguin was the first brand to successfully make the cultural leap from golf to mainstream casual wear in the early 60s. Sinatra, Crosby, Martin and Hope made Penguin the on- and off-course choice for the suave mid-century man.

Perry Ellis is putting on a lot of muscle BEHIND The original penguin. Its technical earl
The golf tees are stylish, comfortable and cool and are named after 70s bowling legend Earl Anthony. What’s not to love? Earl performance
The hoodie is stylish, street and stretchy, which is welcomed by this stylish, mid-century man.

Even better, there’s almost always some kind of sale on the Original Penguin website. of Black Friday Sale it’s 50% off (or more) sitewide, with most things under $50.
TaylorMade R7 Quad mini driver

I don’t know how else to say it, so I’ll just say it: I really like this thing. Like many of you, I was somewhat skeptical about mini drivers. I thought it was just an overweight 2-wood or something. Why not continue to use my 3-wood off the tee?
Well, three things changed my mind. First, I didn’t have much consistency off the tee with my 3-wood. Second, off the deck, my 3-wood was becoming a 50/50 club, meaning it worked about half the time. Third, mine Wilson Dynapower Carbon 5-wood it was becoming a great weapon.
Actually, there was a fourth thing. I demoed a mini driver at Golftec and damn if that thing wasn’t magic. After an assembly in May, TaylorMade R7 Quad mini it went straight into the bag and hasn’t come out since. It’s not an off-deck club for me (the Wilson 5-wood has now turned into a lofted 4-wood and belongs on this list as well) so it’s an open alternative for tight holes where hitting the fairway is a must and for those times when a full driver might go over the fairway or into some crap.
Maxfli XC2 Cuff

These, frankly, were shocking to me. HOW Maxfli golf balls, Maxfli XC2 Cuff are a DICK’S/Golf Galaxy store brand. However, don’t let that scare you. They are a five-step, 1025 carbon steel forging designed by the team at DICK’S-owned Golfworks. While they bear more than a passing resemblance to the Maltby TS3 irons, there is enough difference to make them their own entity.
Anyway, these puppies moved just as great COBRA 3DP irons in my bag for one important reason: a little less offset and a little more spin. I could hit the COBRA a mile, but not with a ton of spin and, more often than I’d like, with a bump. of Maxflis are much less left-biased and, for reasons I still don’t understand, produce more spin despite similar lofts and the same axle.
Sometimes things just ARE so it is better not to ask too many questions.

They are on sale now for $799.98. For forged irons you can try and fit, that’s hard to beat.
Penfold Ryder Cup 1927 Backpack

I travel a lot for my day job, so I tend to go through backpacks like Madonna went through men. I like the pockets, but not too much, and I like the structure, but not too much. of Penfold Ryder Cup 1927 Backpack it’s minimalistic enough so I’m not tempted to overdo it, and structured enough that I don’t feel like I’m carrying a lump on my back.
Its laptop sleeve easily fits my laptop and extended dual-screen monitor. The main compartment fits my accessory bag, headphones and a notebook. The front zippered pocket fits all the other miscellaneous junk that business travelers bring.
My only complaint is that the Penfold doesn’t have a built-in place to fit over the extended handle of a roller suitcase. But, hey, I’m an adult. I can afford it.

It looks coolalso, especially the red leather bottom embossed with “Penfold”.
Heathlander Golf Shoes

I have to admit, these have me hooked.
To keep it simple, Heathlander it checks the three most important boxes for every golf shoe. They’re comfortable, durable and, to my eye anyway, stylish (even my wife thinks I don’t look half stupid in them). The unique pink nail gives you a lot of appeal. It’s also soft enough for comfort and doesn’t leave nasty marks on the green.
They’re not cheap, at $225, but at least Heathlander it doesn’t make you nickel-and-dime. For that price, you also get a padded nylon zip shoe bag, a fabric inner bag, and two pairs of contrasting color shoelaces.

Don’t sleep on small new brands like Heathlander. I just got a pair of under-the-radar shoes from one company called Alma Mater. They can join the Heathlander in golf shoe rotas. They are worth checking out.
Honorable Mention: golf glove forelinks

One last quick one for you.
I first met Tyler Nguyen over the summer on a Google Meet call. The 25-year-old golf glove entrepreneur is as impressive a young man as you’ll ever meet. His story is quintessentially American and his company, forelinksgolf, is the kind of brand you feel compelled to support.
And the gloves? They are not the cheapest (nor are they the most expensive), but they are very, very good.

As I said in the article introducing forelinksgolf for the MyGolfSpy universe, we vote with our dollars for the kind of world we want to live in. I want a world where people like Tyler Nguyen are successful far more than I need a cheap golf glove.
