Love it or hate it, pop culture has made its way into the world of soccer, influencing kit designs, sponsorship opportunities and the overall match experience.
Now, as clubs release a home, away, third and even fourth kit, inspiration is being drawn from pretty much anywhere. If an artist climbs the charts for several weeks, chances are they’ll soon be called into a meeting room to discuss the design of their club’s next shirt.

Major Soccer League’s Seattle Sounders didn’t miss a beat in their Jimi Hendrix-inspired kit. A design that pays tribute to the musical genius whose story began in his own city.
It’s vibrant, it’s electric, it screams rock and roll. Sounders literally took an iconic Hendrix album cover and put it on a T-shirt, while incorporating handwritten lyrics from his hit, “Straight Ahead.”
The Sounders stole the show in the US with this one, honoring the life of one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
Ajax’s Bob Marley inspired kit is a huge story in itself. The club released a stunning design, paying tribute to the Jamaican icon with a red, gold and green jersey.
They wore it in their win against PEC Zwolle in August 2021, and by September the shirt had been banned for displaying illegal images, according to UEFA.
The Dutch club chose to remove the three little birds sewn onto the back of the shirt to comply with the regulations, but created a move unlike anything else in the Eredivisie.
In no time, these shirts were sold all over the world, offering something different for football fans who wanted to share their love for the reggae artist.
It was a huge hit and a lovely shirt.
