The first Quarterinal of all-Italian men for men Grand Slam, gave what was most expected: a prevailing show from the world No.1 Jannik Sinner on his favorite surface. Under the lights in Arthurr Ashe Stadium, the 24-year-old appreciated Lorenzo Masetti, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2, to reserve his place in the semifinals at US Open.
With the victory, Sinner extended his difficult trial of Grand Slam winning in 26 games, and Streak Open his winner at 12. Italian is now 25-1 in Major this year, his only loss coming to Roland-Garros’s final for Carlos Alcaraz.
The sinner, calm and secured, put his experience to work in an open opening group while Masetti showed nerves. Although the 22-year-old raised his level in groups two and three, the result was never in doubt. The high seed saved all the seven points of rest he faced and never let his community find a foundation.
“I like to go deep into a tour and try to raise my level. You know, I feel so from two years now and in the Grand Slams, I really like to play the best five.
“I think with an opponent like him you have to get some chances he gives you, and I was unable to do it,” Masesetti admitted afterwards.
The sinner was ruthless, scoring 28 winners in just 12 for Musetti. He completed the procedures in just two hours, keeping him in his total trial in a 10 hour and 12 minutes manageable up to five games. He has fallen only one set along the way – to Denis Shapovalov in the fourth round.
Reflecting on the challenge of confronting his compatriot, Masetti admitted how much Sinner’s game came.
“Of course many things changed from our last meeting. We both grew up. I honestly never played someone who put me in this kind of rush into rallies, (not giving me) a lot of chances in the rally, and he was always running the rally. So it was a kind of bad feeling, of course.”
The sinner now draws his attention to Felix Auger-Aliasime. The Canadians won their first two meetings, but the Italian exploded it 6-0, 6-2 just a few weeks ago in Cincinnati.
“It will be completely different because, you know, the conditions here are different. He had some great victories, so the increase in great confidence in him,” Sinner said.
