Italy will play for a three-peat Davis Cup without its two top singles stars.
Lorenzo Musetti confirmed that he has withdrawn from next week’s Davis Cup 8 final in Bologna. Musetti, who lost to Carlos Alcaraz in his final ATP Finals round match yesterday, joins world no. Jannik the Sinner who had previously withdrawn from the Davis Cup competition.

Musetti cited fatigue from his extended play to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin – he played in Athens and reached the final last Saturday, losing to Novak Djokovic in a marathon match – and the fact that his long-time partner Veronica is pregnant and expecting the couple’s second child as the main reasons for the withdrawal.
“Given my physical condition and my family situation, in agreement with captain Filippo Volandri, I have decided not to participate in the Davis Cup finals in Bologna,” said Musetti. “Obviously, there is a lot of regret and disappointment about the way I came into this competition, with a better approach, maybe I would have tried to play it, despite the commitment of the family.
“I knew that physical fatigue was hard to shake off after the struggles of the last few months, and especially the last few weeks, in one day.”
Wimbledon winner Sinner has led Italy to the Davis Cup championship in each of the last two years.
