MotoGP: Michelin will simplify the front tire classification for 2026


  • Fewer specs, fewer tires, but an assortment more suited to rider needs.
  • Maintaining a limited allocation in districts most exposed to weather uncertainty and temperature variations.
  • A decision that was approved by all MotoGP stakeholders and confirmed by the Grand Prix Commission as part of Michelin’s long-term strategy.

 

As part of its sustainability strategy and commitment to resource optimization in MotoGP by reducing the number of specifications provided to riders in a progressive and controlled manner—Mission, in consultation with all championship stakeholders, has announced the evolution of front tire allocation from 2026.

 

Simpler and more efficient classification

From 2026, the front tire allocation at most Grands Prix will be revised as follows:

  • 2 details of the front wheelin 2025 instead of 3;
  • 7 tires are assigned to each descriptionin 2025 instead of 5;
  • A total of 14 tiresby 2025 instead of 15.

This new transmission reduces front tire per tire per weekend, offering more freedom of choice by increasing the number of tires best suited to each rider’s style and the characteristics of each circuit.

This approach is fully in line with Michelin’s policy to reduce the number of details, limit the championship’s environmental footprint and maintain the highest possible sporting performance.

 

Special for districts that are vulnerable to climatic conditions

The classification will remain the same for the 2025 season to ensure safety, performance and sporting fairness, especially for circuits exposed to weather instability and temperature variations.

The Grand Prix are as follows:

  • Michelin Grand Prix of France (Le Mans)
  • British Grand Prix (Silverstone)
  • German Grand Prix (Sachsenring)
  • Australian Grand Prix (Philip Island)
  • Valencia Community Grand Prix (Cheste)

In these events, 3 front tire specifications are maintained, 5 tires are assigned to each specification.

 

Coordinated and verified decision

This evolution of the front tire allocation for 2026 has been defined in consultation with the teams as well as Dorna Sport, IRTA and MSMA, and has been officially confirmed by the Grand Prix Commission.
