Bagnaia top, KTM and Yamaha in pursuit at the Misano challenge
MotoGP™ returns to action on Monday, with plenty to see in the pitlane
Monday, September 09, 2024
The Misano MotoGP™ official test is over and it’s a familiar name on it: reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team). Italian Franco Morbidelli (Prima Pramac Racing) and Innea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo Team) entered the 1:30 bracket with a hot pace and crucial track time for many manufacturers, consolidating the top three positions.
With KTM’s wild card bike returning to Yamaha and Honda’s new parts rolling in on Monday, there was plenty to see and talk about up and down the pitlane.
Ducati Lenovo Team, Prima Pramac Racing, Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team and Gresini Racing
Although Ducati continues to dominate, there is no rest for the Italian factory as Bagnaia works hard all day, rolling out new chassis and testing some new parts. On the other side of the box, Bastianini put in a long day, but there were no major parts for the #23, which will leave the factory at the end of the season.
There were also very few changes to see at Pramac, but Morbidelli completed more than 40 laps in the afternoon session, taking second place late on. Meanwhile, championship leader George Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) finished the day in P6.
There weren’t many new classes for Marco Bezcicci, but he had a strong day of racing – he placed eighth. Italian Fabio Di Giannantonio was the only Pertamina Enduro VR46 racing team machine after he decided to focus on rehabbing his left shoulder. At the Gresini Racing MotoGP™, San Marino GP winner Marc Marquez claimed seventh and Alex Marquez continued his career in 12th place.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing & Red Bull GAASGAS Tech3
Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) had a test machine to test today which we have already seen in the hands of San Marino GP wildcard Pol Espargaro. The ‘new’ bike has a different engine, different air and exhaust and the South African eventually finished the test in 11th. Meanwhile, test rider and legend Daniel Pedrosa (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) took control of Miller’s garage as the #26 returned to action. He finished 13th. Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) took part in the afternoon session, finishing the test in 15th.
In Tech 3, there were some new parts to show for Pedro Acosta (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3), who was fast all day – finishing fourth. One of the #31 machines featured a different tail unit and a new high-end exhaust, Acosta also had one of the test machines, just like his 2025 teammate Binder. Meanwhile, Augusto Fernandez (Red Bull GASGAS Tech3) only took part in the morning session, sharing the day with Miller and finishing 20th.
Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™ Team
Yamaha had a lot to work on during testing, bringing new parts to the Misano, including a new engine and chassis. Taking full advantage of their discounts, the Iwata factory tested several units during the year in private tests. This allowed the Japanese manufacturer to do some back-to-back runs to confirm where the improvements are.
Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™ Team’s Fabio Quatararo also showed good pace on the timesheets, finishing the day in fifth after improving on the final lap time. Meanwhile, his teammate Alex Rins was “satisfied” with the sections tested on Monday and finished the session in P16.
Aprilia Racing and Track House Racing
It’s been busy at Aprilia, with Maverick Vinales (Aprilia Racing) and team-mate Aleix Espargaro spending the day finding improvements to their setup and ergonomics as the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix approaches. Vinales also said a key focus on braking is improving. Espargaro finished 14th and finished ninth. Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia Racing) was on track working on the development of the 2025 package.
At Trackhouse Racing, Raul Fernandez logged the miles, with both the RS-GP23 and RS-GP24 in the #25 box and some parts to test during the day. He claimed 11th, while teammate Miguel Oliveira (Trackhouse Racing) completed a strong number of laps and at the end of the day the #88 was P17 as he tried to clear the current pack.
Repsol Honda Group and CASTROL/IDEMITSU Honda LCR
Much of today’s attention has been around HRC, and Repsol Honda team’s Joan Mir and Luca Marini have been suffering through illness at the San Marino GP weekend. Mir had three bikes on his side of the garage, including wild card Stefan Bradl, and finished 22nd at the end of the day in 21st behind Marini. Bradley also went outside working with a machine.
In LCR, Johan Zarco (CASTROL Honda LCR) tried out a new side fairing that he used early in the morning session. He was generally positive about the report they got, contrary to Mir’s comments – see their thoughts below. Takaki Nakagami (IDEMITSU Honda LCR) showed up with some carbon fiber livery on Monday, with all hands on deck at Honda as they move forward into the top ten battle.
That’s a wrap on Misano’s challenge, but not on Misano! The Adriatic Classic hosts the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in just over a week and a half, and there are plenty of results to be had. Who will come out on top? Join us from September 20th to September 22nd to find out!
