MotoGP: Acosta’s opening experience in Brazil

Pedro Acosta took first place in MotoGP World Championship Free Practice One (FP1) on Friday morning at Autodromo Internacional de Goiania – Ayrton Senna, Brazil. The Spaniard, riding the Michelin-shod Red Bull KTM Factory Racing RC16, led the 22-rider field with a lap of 1:26.688 around the 2.38-mile (3.84 km) track.

Jack Miller was second best on his Prima Pramac Yamaha YZR-M1 in 1:26.775.

Marco Bezecchi was third in his Aprilia Racing RS-GP26 with a lap of 1:26.918.

Marc Marquez was fourth on his Lenovo Ducati Desmosedici GP26 with a time of 1:26.975.

Franco Morbidelli crossed the line fifth on the Pertamina Enduro VR46 Ducati Desmosedici GP25 with a time of 1:27.170.

As MotoGP action opened in Brazil, Acosta edged Miller, Bezecic third. The championship leader takes the top spot in our first session in Goiânia, with Miller in close company and Bezchichi in third.

MotoGP is officially back in Brazil! It was a bit later than planned but the first session was in the books after a very rainy morning in Goiânia – and Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) took the first stage of the weekend with a 1:26.688. The extended session – like the new position – boiled down to a flurry of changes at the top of the timesheets, with Acosta pipping Jack Miller (Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP) by 0.087 and Marco Bezecchi (Aprilia Racing) P3, 0.230 off the top.

Action for the MotoGP class began at midday after a rain delay, with Miller looking to start in the wet with half an hour to go and the first rider to wait a bit. As the Australian exited, Marc Marquez led team-mate Francesco Bagnaia by just 0.001 with Acosta just 0.004 ahead, but things changed as the track dried.

After Miller’s experiment, however, they were not dry enough for slugs for some time. The rest were beaten in the wet, with Marc Marquez still third in 1:27.7 ahead of Alex Rins (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) and Acosta.

In the last ten minutes, the time sheet was completely lit and the slips came out. Jorge Martin (Aprilia Racing) was leading just a few minutes on the clock before the flurry of red sectors started to roll in, and at the end of the burst he was leading Acosta – but not by much. The #37 edged Miller by just 0.87, with Bezcicchi third by 0.230 over the top. Marc Marquez dropped to fourth, another few hundredths in arrears, with Franco Morbidelli (Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team) fifth and Maverick Viñales (Red Bull KTM Tech3) last-minute pickpockets edged Martin to P7.

Fermin Aldeguer (BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP) moved up to eighth, 0.888 up. That’s no mean feat when both are coming back from broken legs. And Enticing drivers to push the limits during changing conditions. He finished FP1 ahead of Bagnaia and Alex Marquez.

There were no crashes during the session when the riders were introduced to Ayrton Senna at the Autodromo, only a few moments on the road and Joan Mir (Honda HRC Castrol) was unscathed when they ran early in the session.
