
David Alonso (CFmoto Gaviota Aspar Team) continued to write his name in the history books at the Thailand PT Grand Prix, taking his 12th win of the season and making history as a rider for the most races in a single season in the lightweight class. . Rain or shine, Alonso proved he was in the mix, edging out Luca Lunetta (SIC58 Squadra Corse) by 0.353s after the Italian found impressive pace in difficult conditions. Luneta was impressive as Colin Weir (Leaky Molly Husqvarna Intact GP) claimed the final spot on the podium after a spectacular run to the line.
A wet race has been announced, meaning a reduced distance of 12 laps and the chance for the Moto3™ field to complete several sight-seeing laps after the weekend dries out. It was a choice of tires on the grid, with Joel Kelso (BOE Motorsports) claiming the pit position and taking the lead at Turn 1 with the majority of the field opting for efficiency.
It was an impressive start, stealing the lead from the Australian without Veger waiting to strike. Ivan Ortola (MT Helmets – MSI) responded on lap #66 as he created chances after weaving his way through the top five. The #48 attacked Kelso after the pole sitter dropped to P5 after a tough lap 3.
Meanwhile, it was not long before Alonso’s time to shine as patches of rain fell across the circuit. The Colombian grabbed the lead on lap 4 to claim his 12th win of the season and a chance to make history in Thailand. Alonso had a tough race on his hands from Taiyo Furusato (Honda Team Asia) who got his first chance in P1 and started to put the hammer down.
Luneta started to pull in, catching up to the back of the lead group at an impressive pace. The Italian #58 started to battle with Vejer as he made his appearance on the podium. There was drama at the front for the Leopard Racing team when Angel Piqueras and Adrian Fernandez collided on lap 11.
Ortola and Alonso faced off in the 12th and final lap. As Lunetta and Weir managed to grab the podium from Ortola, Alonso waved his move through the Thai and raced into the final corner. Furusato had a tragic end while running to the line after contact with the #95.
The fourth place was taken by Ortola, who was unable to take the podium after a difficult last corner. Furusato completed the top five after suffering a crash on the line, with David Munoz (BOE Motorsports) chasing after sixth – struggling from P17 on the grid. Scott Ogden (FleetSafe Honda – MLav Racing) took the checkered flag in a solid eighth, with Munoz edging teammate Kelso to the line.
Further back, Stefano Nepa (LEVELUP – MTA) and Likki Molly Husqvarna Intact GP’s Tatsuki Suzuki competitor rounded out the top 10. The #24 was ahead of compatriot Ryuusei Yamanaka in 11th, with Daniel Holgado (Red Bull GAASGAS Tech3), (Riccardo Rossi) CIP Green Power), Filippo Farioli (SIC58 Squadra Corse) and Red Bull KTM’s Ajo Jose Antonio Ruda scoring the final points on Sunday.
