The 51-year-old Englishman fired a seven-nine 65 round to put it within the striking distance of leader Adrian Meronk. But Westwood’s hopes took a hit during the second round of Friday, when he found himself in the midst of a violation of strange rules.
Westwood hit his shot in the 16th hole in a mess running along the road. Westwood arrived at risk of water and seemed to notice his ball in the mess. His caddy, Mick Doran, took him and Westwood, after a few considerations, took his fall with the same ball and hit his third shot in green.
