Moses Itauma beat Dillian Whyte by TKO on Saturday night in the 1st round of their scheduled 10 round in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Whether itauma’s winning attack included a rabbit punch or not, it was an impressive performance. The 20-year-old Itauma was compared to Mike Tyson, who won the World Heavyweight Championships in 1986, 20 years old, against Trevor Berbick.
It has been spoken that itauma can get a shot at the World Heavyweight title by the end of this year. However, this may be premature, as Dillian Whyte was the only boxer at the elite level he fought in his short professional career of just over two and a half years. Furthermore, Itauma’s punch resistance has not been tested so far. It is also not known whether he has the durability to hold a 12 -round battle, after fighting only a maximum of 06 rounds in any of his 13 professional fights.
After watching Itauma’s fight against Whyte at Ringside, boxing promoter Eddie Hearn said he wanted to see Itauma fighting ‘a lively, active heavyweight’. You can go further to argue that this fighter should have some name recognition and still have to be in his lead. There are many such fighters who will give Itauma a much -needed experience and valuable lessons to learn.
His management team is probably aware that there are heavyweights there, which will not just roll and just turn up against Itauma for a payday. They will challenge him, take him to places where he has never been before, and even before Itauma put the risk of losing his unbeaten record. He needs attacks with fighters like this, if only to make him understand that not every fight he will have during his career will be just as one -sided as the one he has had so far.
How many battles did itauma before he gets a world title shot depends on how he deals with the fighting he has after his one against Dillian Whyte. It can be disputed that Itauma must be patient and treat his career as a learning curve.
As a young man, he needs the right guidance, which only his management team can offer. He is perhaps a man in a hurry and wants praise right away. However, he must combat his impatience. It may seem cruel to say that, but itauma has to learn to crawl before he can walk.
Itauma’s victory against Whyte was a good start. But it was just a beginning. Itauma still has a long way to go before he can say that he is the right case. It is hoped that he remains equal during this process and notes people who tell him whatever he wants to hear.
In his honor, Itauma said after his battle Saturday night that he did not deserve a world title now. True fans of heavyweight box should be encouraged by this attitude and hope that he remains as based on his journey to the top of the game.
If the time is right, Moses Itauma can then take his opportunity and prove that the boast was made on his behalf that he is the future of the heavyweight section, was not unfounded words, but in reality is very rooted.
