David Morrell says WBC interim light heavyweight champion David Benavidez is a “Robocop” who can’t dance and has “nothing” going for him in their upcoming fight on February 1st in the main event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) sees Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) as an unathletic, robotic fighter who can’t move and couldn’t knock out Caleb Plant in their fight last year. He feels he will have no trouble neutralizing his offense, which requires his opponents to stand still so he can stand and throw punches in bunches.
Morrell’s mission
It will be interesting to see if Benavidez can handle the power of Morrell, 26, in this fight as Ronald Gavril dropped him in the 12th round of their first fight in 2017. Many boxing fans think Bebafvidez lost that fight, so there was a rematch. Benavidez also struggled in his last fight against Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
“It’s no secret to anyone that Benavidez is Robocop. This is it. Watch Benavidez vs. Plant. It was 12 rounds. This fight revealed secrets,” said David Morrell Premier Buck Championsletting fans know that David Benavidez is robotic and going up against Caleb Plant.
“I never fought Plant before, but I don’t think Plant had too much power for Benavidez. He’s a big guy. He is also stronger. So, if you have good legs, you train hard, you have strength, and everything, Benavidez has nothing for you now.
“I can dance. I have moves. Benavidez can’t dance. That’s it,” Morrell said.
What Benavidez was in the past when he was campaigning at 168 against smaller, older fights ready to hit the mothballs for deconstruction is no more. He now fights at 175 and is forced to face high-level opposition. So far, Benavidez hasn’t looked good in this new weight class, and there’s a good chance he’ll lose to Morrell by knockout on February 1st.
There is a lot at stake for both fighters in this clash. The winner will fight for the Undisputed Light Heavyweight Championship against Artur Beterbiev or Dmitri Bivol. The loser will start again and come to the back of the line.
Given the hype and huge pressure that PBC has put behind Benavidez all these years, they will bring him back quickly and, if possible, try to set up a rematch with Morrell.
