Morrell vs. Khataev: Former champion envisages for dominant returns and declaration victory in Queens

David Morrell says he comes in his fight against the 2020 Olympic Imam Khataev with “Bricks” In his fists for their scheduled battle of ten round on July 12 at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York.

Morrell vs Khataev preview

Morrell (11-1, 9 costs) wants to prove his doubters wrong by making a statement against the unbeaten Khataev (10-0, 9 COs) in their undercard fight. Morrell vs. Khataev will be streamed on Dazn ppv As part of a loaded card fitted by Turki Alalshikh.

Some Boxing fans believe that the former world champion of two divisions, Morrell, was done, and that it is no more than one of the most important players at 175 after his loss of David Benavidez in February last year. In that battle, Morrell had the wrong strategy to deal with the high volume offense of benavidez.

The way to win would have been to go after him early with full power combinations. Instead, Morrell focuses on boxing, loading occasionally and allowing benavidez to stack the rounds with high output.

Khataev has the same uninterrupted punch style as benavidez, although it is slower and focuses on power with his shots. If Morrell did not learn about his loss of ‘the Mexican monster’, he would lose to him.

Khataev’s unbeaten record

Khataev’s opposition has been so poor since he became pro in 2021 that it is impossible to know if he is good. We know that he has a record of 90-23 in the amateurs, but he has not fought a talented fighter since 2021 when he lost to Ben Whittaker. By this time, Khataev’s promoters had to strengthen him against world -class opposition as he had Olympic experience.

“I’m getting something hurt,” David Morrell said in a press release about his fight against Imam Khataev on July 12. “I know Khataev is strong and unbeaten, but he wasn’t there with this version of me yet. He is good, yes, but I’m better. I am faster, I am smarter and I come in this battle with bricks in my fists.

‘A victory here? Man, it changes everything. It puts me on the map again. All the top guys have to look on my way again, ‘says Morrell.

Benavidez -loss lessons

A victory for Morrell may change things for his career, but he has to look impressive. He cannot be beaten as in his loss of benavidez and came out of the fight with his stock. He must show that he learned from that loss, and that he can let his hands go more because he doesn’t throw enough blows.

The warning signs were already there for Morrell when he fought Radivoje Kalajdzic in August last year. He made the fight harder than it should have been by not jumping on him.

When Morrell let his hands go early, he hurt Radivoye and ready to be stopped. But he did not follow up a constant attack. The blueprint was already there about how to stop him with the way Artur Betterbiev knocked him out. Morrell did the opposite and chose to occasionally throw shots and dance around the outside.
