Morrell Sharp With Rolly, Smith Fight Looks Different

Rolly brought pressure. He stayed in and let his hands go. It forced a response from the Cuban each time. Morrell had to stay sharp just to keep the exchanges under control. That part will carry over for his upcoming fight. The question is how much it helps him for his April 18 fight in Liverpool.

WBO interim light heavyweight champion Callum Smith is not that type of opponent. He is 6-foot-3. He fights at a distance. He works behind a longer jab and picks his spots without coming over with his trademark left hook. The exchanges probably won’t look like this.

This session with Rolly will help Morrell’s with reactions. That doesn’t reflect the spacing he’ll deal with against Smith.

That doesn’t make the job wrong. Camps are not built in one look. Fighters bring in different styles to stay ready for anything. Rolly gives danger, makes you react, and he keeps the pace high.

Still, this leaves a small question. If this is one of the visible pieces of Morrell’s preparation, it leans more toward general sharpening than opponent-specific work. The training required to handle a tall outdoor fighter is not clear here. Smith is much taller and has a dangerous left hook that he throws repeatedly. It is the main weapon in his arsenal.

Rolly, for his part, has his own situation. He has been linked with a possible fight with Devin Haney at 147, a match that would bring two belt holders together if made. There is also the issue of his WBA commitment against Shakhram Giyasov, which has not been resolved.

The shadow box between Morrell and Rolly is two fighters preparing for very different problems.

Morrell’s night in Liverpool will come down to whether he is consistent on the attack and how he handles a bigger man who doesn’t rush into mistakes. This clip shows he is sharp. It just doesn’t show the fight he’s going to have.
