Monaco secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Olympique de Marseille at the Stade Louis II, with second-half goals from Aleksandr Golovin and Folarin Balogun proving decisive. Lukáš Hrádecký’s heroic goalkeeping performance was key to the win.
Monaco came into this crucial Ligue 1 clash in excellent form, having won their last five league games. They were aiming to close the gap on fourth-placed Marseille, who had experienced a more inconsistent run of late. European qualification hopes were at stake for both clubs on 5 April 2026.
The first part unfolded as a tight, tactical battle. Both teams struggled to find a clear attacking rhythm in a gap first period. Monaco’s Lamine Camara received an early yellow card in the 8th minute for a professional foul, highlighting the intensity.
Marseille gradually grew into the contest, asserting more possession and creating dangerous chances. Monaco goalkeeper Lukáš Hrádecký was kept busy, making several crucial saves to deny the visitors. Facundo Medina received a yellow card for Marseille in the 34th minute after a strong challenge.
Despite Marseille’s efforts, which included a higher proportion of shots, Monaco’s defense remained resolute. The first 45 minutes ended without either team breaking the scoreline. The tension was palpable heading into the interval.
The half-time break offered managers a chance to recalibrate strategies. Monaco certainly needed to increase their offensive intent. Marseille tried to turn their statistical advantage into tangible goals.
Monaco finally broke the deadlock in the 59th minute. Aleksandr Golovin picked up a clever pass from Jordan Teze, guiding his shot confidently into the net. The Stade Louis II erupted as Monaco took the lead.
The goal gave strength to the locals. Thilo Kehrer was booked for Monaco in the 71st minute as the physicality of the match increased. Just three minutes later, Folarin Balogun doubled Monaco’s lead. He found space in the 74th minute and fired a powerful shot past the Marseille goalkeeper.
Marseille, however, refused to surrender. Amine Gouiri ignited hope for the visitors with a goal in the 85th minute. Facundo Medina provided the assist and set up a thrilling final few minutes. Leonardo Balerdi was booked for tripping in the 87th minute as frustration mounted.
In the end, Monaco won 2-1 despite Marseille’s statistical superiority. The visitors registered 19 shots with 9 on target, compared to Monaco’s 7 shots and 3 on target. Monaco’s xG was 1.17, significantly lower than Marseille’s 2.11, underscoring Hrádecký’s seven key saves.
This vital win propels Monaco further up the Ligue 1 table, strengthening their pursuit of a coveted European place. For Marseille, the result represents a disappointing blow to their campaign for continental top-flight football, despite a spirited comeback attempt.
