The Spanish runner clocked 2:14.52 to beat Wilson Kipkater’s mark but missed out on Ayanle Suleiman’s world record.
Mohamed Atawi’s attempt to break Ayanle Suleiman’s decades-old indoor 1000m world record of 2:14.20 has failed. The Spaniard clocked 2:14.52 to move into third place on the all-time world rankings and ahead of European record holder Wilson Kipketer’s 2:14.96.
Ataui sat behind pacesetter Philipp Ostrovsky and cruised through the 800m in 1:45.58 before struggling a bit in the final lap as Mariano Garcia was second in 2:16.40 and Britain’s Alex Botterill fourth in 2:17.69.

Atawi, 24, has an outdoor best of 1:42.04 in the 800m and was fifth in last year’s world finals in Tokyo and runner-up to France’s Gabriel Tual at the 2024 European Championships.
Elsewhere, in the men’s 60m hurdles, Enrique Llopis clocked a Spanish record of 7.45 to beat Lorenzo Simonelli (7.50).

Oman’s Ali Al Balushi won the 60m in 6.53 from Cuba’s Jens Fernandez (6.56) as Britain’s Eugenie Amo-Dadzi equaled her PB of 6.59 for third place.

The Netherlands’ Liek Claver won the women’s 400m in 51.26 ahead of Spain’s Blanca Hervas (51.59) and Ethiopia’s Birke Hylom clocked 4:02.37 in the women’s 1500m to beat Nadia Battokleti’s national record of Italy’s Zeedokletti. 4:03.59.

Audrey Vero won the women’s 800m, but hopes of a fast time faded as it turned into a tactical affair and she clocked 2:00.68, slower than B-race winner Rocio Arroya of Spain’s 1:59.97.
