I recently went through an iron fitting to replace my Callaway Apex DCB grips. They were originally fitted for me and served their purpose as I played more casual golf with my kids. Good distance, lots of help, nothing too demanding. But over time, the look and durability just didn’t match up to what I wanted.
I’m in that weird middle ground where many golfers find themselves. I want the feel and look of a player’s iron, but still need enough forgiveness to survive a few rushed nine-hole rounds a week with the kids in tow.
I’m not playing competitive golf right now, but I’ll never stop chasing low scores. I wanted a cleaner profile, better feel and more control (all with a little help).
My fitter narrowed the test down to four irons: Fake Mizuno JPX 925, Title T250, Srixon ZXi5AND Callaway Apex Ai150.
Below is my take on each, what I felt, what I saw, and what actually mattered to my game.
Fake Mizuno JPX 925
This was easily my favorite smelt of the group. Mizuno’s forged heads have that special softness. The flight was strong and high, something I prefer, and the top down view was exactly what I was looking for.
of JPX 925 Forged made it to my last two. It checked all the boxes: clean, soft, durable, workable, but forgiving enough to play golf the way I do now.
Callaway Apex Ai150
On paper, this should have been the easiest transition. I’ve been in Callaway irons for years and switching to the newer Apex felt like the next natural step.
When I washed it, He 150 it was great. The problem was the mistakes. I saw the same inconsistent distance patterns I experienced with my previous Callaway set. Instead of hitting every 7-iron 153 yards, I’d hit a few that soared to 160 and a few that hovered in the high 140s. It doesn’t help me to have “hero” numbers; I might ditch those 160s for something more durable.
And because I tested the same shaft throughout the assembly, the misalignment was not a shaft problem.
Srixon ZXi5
This was my first time getting into one Srixon iron. Srixon continues to prove that it deserves to be mentioned whenever players talk about high-end irons.
The feel was definitely firmer than the Mizuno, maybe “hot off the face” is a good description. The ball bounces, the head feels stable, and the performance across the board impressed me. If you want premium performance with a lively and fast feel, ZXi5 joins the conversation every time.
Title T250
It has been almost 15 years since I played a set of Titleist irons but T250 it reminded me why I loved them in the first place. This iron delivers a blend of workability, accuracy, consistency and control that immediately feels like a solution.
What surprised me the most is how forgiving they are. Titleist designs T250 with a forged L-Face and V-Taper technology that aims to improve ball speed on low shots and help launch the ball more consistently. I could immediately feel that stability, especially on shots that weren’t perfect.
of T250 it gave me the confidence to shape shots but didn’t punish me when my swing wasn’t at its best. And they look clean too. Performance always comes first for me (spin, launch, stability, distance control) but it never hurts to like what you see in the bag.
Who won my iron fitting?
There’s a whole discussion to be had about the shaft side of this mount, but that’s for another article. When narrowing the bars, I like to take two from the top and go back and forth until one “fits”.
And the iron I kept reaching for was that Title T250.
Maybe it’s because I’ve played Titleist irons in the past. Maybe it’s because they hit the sweet spot of everything I need in my game. Or maybe T250 it’s simply one of the most balanced irons in the golfer distance category right now.
Whatever the reason, I moved away from my fit with T250 as my winner.
Final thoughts
