Gary Woodland There was a rough evening on Saturday and a long day on Sunday that left it on the wrong side of FedEx Cup bubble.
But he is looking at them all in an optimistic light.
“Very positive from this season,” Woodland said. “This is not striking not to go on. But I’m excited to rest. I need it. Rest, spend time with family, be a little healthier and then prepare for the Ryder Cup.”
Heading to this week’s Wyndham Championship, Woodland was 75th in FedEx cUp the rankings, five scared slots of the top-70 cut after season. He was still in running for play off. But he also accepted his constant struggle to be physically and mentally recovered from the operation he underwent to remove a brain tumor in 2023. It was a learning process, Woodland said, understanding how to calm his nervous system after stimulating the tour game. Woodland went so far as to say that he probably shouldn’t have played at PGA Tour in 2024.
Woodland enjoyed a strong start until 2025, with three ends of Top-25. But his game has fallen since then. on Sedgefield country club In Greensboro, NC, this week, Woodland opened with rounds 67-64 to put himself in quarrel, but he flattened with equal rounds of 70 Saturday and Sunday to finish T23. forest entered the last round of Sunday as the bubble boypredicted to end at 70. But he late Bogeys Sunday condemned his fate on the play off.
It was a good show, but not so good, as he ended up at 72 in the FedEx ranking.
He would give it all, said Woodland. But he also admitted that the strain of competition had captured them.
“I came out of the gas. I did.” He said. “Credit to my boiler today, man. I will tell you, he was unbelievable. I told him before we started I was fighting. I had a harsh night last night, a harsh breakfast this morning. He did everything for me today. He led me around. I was just trying to hit the shooting. I wasn’t enough.
The Woodland season may have been over, but his work has not been done, as he will serve as Keegan Bradley’s assistant Captain at Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in September.
In that role, Woodland will surely contribute to Bradley’s choice for captain’s elections. In WynDham, Woodland took a close look at one of the potential contenders, Cameron Youngwho left with a six -shot victory.
Was Young’s dominant performance a sign that he would fit well in Team USA?
“I mean, the way he runs the golf ball, his setting statistics this year are really good,” Woodland said. “Cam has a lot of talent and at any time you can bring a lot of talent, it helps everyone. I’m happy for her. As I said, I think it’s just the beginning for him.”
It is, in other words, too early on that kind of conversation. But for Woodland, at least, it’s not too soon to start looking back.
“It was a good year in many ways, but I have a long way to go in many ways,” Woodland said. “The best parts of my game are in a really good place and I’m happy with that.”
