Michael Laverty says Aprilia has emerged from Ducati’s shadow in MotoGP despite the difference in resources. The Noale factory has dominated the 2026 championship so far.

Michael Laverty praised Aprilia’s ‘special’ MotoGP development

Speaking TNT Sports After the United States GP, Laverty changed the dynamic between Aprilia and Ducati.

When Apria returned to MotoGP in 2012, they scored two entries in the ‘Claim Rules Teams’ category, effectively running modified production engines. Later they were named as ‘Open Entry’.

Both of these labels offered a competitive advantage in terms of engine ratings, fuel loads and tire compounds, to make up for the gap to factory rivals.

Aprilia will be racing in its current production form from 2022. They are now at the forefront of aerodynamic innovation, following Ducati’s lead already, with developments such as the wing and F-duct.

“I think back to 10 years ago, they were supporting Ducati’s challenges, they were watching what Ducati was doing. Now, they’ve stolen a rally against them, maybe they’re dominant,” Laverty said.

“It’s special to think that the Aprilia has a small racing factory compared to Ducati, their power, suddenly it catches them.”
