Recently, I encountered several articles on Mexico’s WBC World Featherweight Champion, Salvador Sanchez, 44-1-1, with 32 knockouts. This is an impressive record.

The only time I saw Sanchez battle ever was in September 1980 and won a majority decision on Guyana’s Patrick Ford, with 16-0, when he was 36-1-1, in Freeman Coliseum, in San Antonio, Texas, via television. I thought Ford was doing enough to make the decision.
Sanchez would continue to win his next seven battles before losing his life in a car collision on August 12, 1982 and collided with a truck while he was fast, by police report.
Sanchez won the title and stopped Danny ‘Little Red’ Lopez, 42-3, in February 1980 in Phoenix, AZ. He later stopped one of the biggest boxers of Puerto Rico, Wilfredo Gomez, with 32-0-1, in August 1981 in Las Vegas. He would win his next three fights, and ended with the stop of future champion Azumah Nelson, 13-0, in Madison Square Garden.
Watch the Great World Super Featherweight, Lightweight and Light Welterweight Champion Julio ‘JC’ Chavez, 107-6-2 with 85 knockouts compared to about 29 title defense.
Chavez had victories over Roger Mayweather, Rocky Lockridge, Juan Laporte, Edwin Rosario, Rafael Limon, Jose Luis Ramirez, Sammy Fuentes, Meldrick Taylor, Lonnie Smith, Hector Camacho, Greg Haugen, Frankie Randall, Tony Lopez, Giovanni Parisi and Joy. Lose against Randall, Oscar de la Hoya and Kostya Tszyu.
Both fighters were included in the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Who do you think was the biggest Mexican champion between the two?
