Danil Medvedev made a winner of life without the long coach Gilles Cervara on Saturday in Hangzhou, beating American teenager Nishash Basavarddy 6-2, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals.

“I haven’t won a lot of matches, so I’m happy to win,” Medvedev told the crowd after scoring his 27th victory of the season.

“It was a great match from me – happy with the way I played and the way I served.”

Medvedev fired eight aces and dropped only 14 points in the service in general. He broke Basavareddy’s service four times as he withdrew nine consecutive games to get from 2-2 to the first set to 6-2, 5-0. The American gave up on three games before Medvedev finally finished it within an hour and 16 minutes.

The 29-year-old Russian, ranked 18, recently completed an eight-year partnership with Cervara who gave 20 titles and the open crown of US 2021. Instead, Medvedev has recorded Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke to lead him during the 2025 closing months.

“It has not been an easy decision, but I am happy to try (Johansson and Goetzke) for the rest of the season and then for the season (next), I will see how it goes,” Medvedev told China in early this week. “I love the way they work. I love what they say, and it’s a new interesting project in my career.”

Next, Medvedev will face China’s Wu Yibing, who gathered in the past Sebastian Korda 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to reserve his country in the last eight.
