Caleb plant will fight bottom Jose Armando Resendiz, a 168-LB contender, while Jermall Charlo will come from another two-year dismissal to face travel man Thomas Lamanna in the co-function on a 31st map in Las Vegas.
Mike Coppinger of The ring, reports That the former IBF Super Middleweight Champion ‘Sweethands’ plant (23-2, 14 COs) against #15 WBA Contender Resendiz (15-2, 11 costs) and Jermall Jermall (33-0, 22 COs) will tackle Lamanna (39-5-1, 18 COs). The idea is that Plant (32) and Charlo win their fights and battle later this year.
May 31 Card
- Caleb plant against Jose Armando Resendiz
- Jermall Charlo vs. Thomas Page
With all the daring talks that Caleb plant did on social media, why does he choose a low-ranked fighter like Resendiz? Elijah Garcia Resendiz knocked out in the eighth round on September 30, 2023. Since the loss, Resendiz has only fought once and beat Fernando Paliza (5-2) with a fifth round on February 21. Fighting someone at this level to fight a fight against an inactive 35-year-old Jermall Charlo seems poor from planting.
Lamanna is known for his first round loss of Erislandy Lara in 2021 and his decision defeated Brian Mendoza in 2020. These are the matches for which Lamanna is known.
The “tune-ups”
The obvious question is: Why do plant and Jermall need tune-ups to prepare for their bad blood fight? These two mid-30-year-old fighters do not need warm-up fights to prepare for a collision with no world titles at stake. None of these guys will win world titles at their age. Both had their time and now rest on their fame as short world title holders many years ago.
There is bad blood between Charlo and planting their incident on July 28, 2023, when ‘Sweethands’ Jermall hit the Errol Spence against Terence Crawford Weigh-in. The plant ran to refrain Jermall from retaliation. Interestingly, they never set up a fight after that, which is strange, because the logical thing they had to do would have been to set a collision, while the interest of this theater change was still in fans’ minds.
It says a lot that plant and Jermall match this low level of opposition. Plant has not fought an opponent at a high level since losing against David Banavidez two years ago in 2023. In the last fight of Caleb, he beat an obscure contender for the fringe advantage, Trevor McCumby, after being dropped off by him early on September 14 last year and walked on another occasion on another event. Plant finally knocked McCumby out in the ninth round, but it was not impressive.
Plant must show some gumption and adopt a talented contender at 168 pounds like Osleys Iglesias (13-0, 12 COs) to fight a fight with the inactive former World Champion of two Jermall division. Plant should not only talk to the talk, but also walk. If he calls out the hype track Edgar Berlanga and then fights against Resendez to come to a match against Jermall, shows that plant is no different from the New Yorker, but only focuses on money.
