The United States men’s national team has named Mauricio Pochettino as its new head coach.
Pochettino goes back to work afterwards leaving Chelsea in May and will lead the USMNT in the 2026 FIFA World Cup at home.
In a statement, Pochettino said: “The decision to join US Soccer wasn’t just about soccer for me, it’s about the journey that this team and this country are on.
“The energy, the passion and the hunger to achieve something truly historic here, those are the things that inspired me. The opportunity to lead the US men’s national team, in front of fans as passionate as the players, is something. I couldn’t pass it up, I see a group of players full of talent and potential, and together we will build something special that the whole nation can be proud of.”
U.S. Soccer Sporting Director Matt Crocker, who led the hiring process, added: “Mauricio is a serial winner with a deep passion for player development and a proven ability to build cohesive and competitive teams.
“His track record speaks for itself, and I am confident that he is the right choice to leverage the immense potential of our talented team. We are delighted to have Mauricio on board as we embark on this exciting journey to achieve success in the ‘world stage.’
Pochettino he will replace interim coach Mikey Varas and take charge of his first games next month in friendlies against Panama and Mexico.
Prior to his time at Chelsea, Pochettino enjoyed success in charge of Espanyol, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and Paris Saint-Germain.
