Osasuna produced a stunning upset at Estadio El Sadar, defeating league leaders Real Madrid 2-1 with a dramatic late winner.
Real Madrid arrived in Pamplona sitting comfortably at the top of La Liga, with a formidable record of 19 wins and just two defeats. Mid-table Osasuna, despite their good form at home, faced an uphill battle against the champions, who had been on a five-match winning streak.
The match began with ferocious intensity from the home side, fueled by the passionate Sadar crowd. Osasuna’s aggressive play baffled the visitors, leading to several early skirmishes.
A crucial moment came in the 37th minute when Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois conceded a penalty. Ante Budimir stepped forward confidently to convert the shot in the 38th minute, leaving the home crowd in raptures.
The referee’s whistle brought a surprising end to the first half, with Osasuna holding on to a slim lead. Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid needed a tactical rethink. They tried to regain their usual dominance and find an equaliser.
Real Madrid pressed for an equalizer after the restart, immediately increasing their attacking tempo. Substitutions from both teams aimed to provide fresh impetus, with Real Madrid introducing Eduardo Camavinga and Dani Carvajal in the 64th minute.
Vinicius Junior finally broke through Osasuna’s resolute defense in the 73rd minute. Federico Valverde provided a precise assist for the Brazilian to head home, restoring parity. The visiting team felt a momentum shift in their favor.
As the clock wound down, Real Madrid pressed hard for a winner, dominating possession. However, Osasuna remained determined and dangerous on the counter-attack, showing no signs of wilting under the pressure.
Then, in a stunning 90th-minute turnaround, Osasuna struck again. Substitute Raúl García de Haro, assisted by Raúl Moro, guided the ball past Courtois to seal an unforgettable victory. The Sadar erupted in jubilation.
Osasuna defied the possession stats, with just 39% of the ball compared to Real Madrid’s 61%. Crucially, Osasuna produced a superior Expected Goals (xG) of 2.05 to Real Madrid’s 1.69, reflecting their clinical output. Goalkeeper Sergio Herrera also made four vital saves for the home side.
The shock defeat marks only Real Madrid’s third defeat in La Liga this season, potentially tightening the title race. For Osasuna, it’s a declared victory, boosting their European aspirations and cementing their reputation as giant-slayers at home.
