After Newcastle’s 2-0 win over Arsenal in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final, he appeared to say goodbye to the club’s fans. However, after the match head coach Eddie Howe and sporting director Paul Mitchell held talks which led to further discussions with Dubravka over his future.

“The fans need to know: I traveled to Manchester to give them the chance, but they didn’t want me!” – Which Man Utd legend met with the club to become chairman?

Dubravka has stepped up in the absence of the injured Nick Pope, starting the last 10 games, winning nine, keeping six clean sheets and conceding just seven goals.

Although the 36-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season, the new deal is expected to include improved terms.

“I think Martin has been in a difficult situation, like any player coming out of contract in the summer.” Howe said earlier this month. “Always with any player I’ve worked with, there’s always that feeling of doubt. Naturally, he will want some conclusions in his future, whether it’s a new contract with us or whatever the outcome.

“I think Martin has done really well in that period, I think there’s been a lot of noise but when I look at him he’s exactly the same,” Howe said. “I think he now has the experience of his career to be able to handle those moments, maybe as a younger player he would have found it much more difficult.

“But he’s carried on really well, and I think he’s been very measured in his approach, he’s never let anything on the pitch affect his psychology, I think that’s been the biggest draw.”
