Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the hero for Marseille, striking twice in the final ten minutes to complete a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over rivals Lyon at the Orange Velodrome.
Olympique Marseille secured a sensational 3-2 win against Olympique Lyonnais on March 1, 2026. A late brace from veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sealed Ligue 1’s dramatic derby victory. The Orange Velodrome erupted as Marseille completed a stunning turnaround.
This much-anticipated “Choc des Olympiques” saw third-placed Lyon visit fourth-placed Marseille. The two teams found themselves in a tight race for the European qualification places. Lyon arrived with stronger recent form, while Marseille looked to close the gap on their rivals.
The match started just three minutes later. Lyon’s Corentin Tolisso sent a powerful shot past Marseille’s goalkeeper, assisted by Endrick. This first attack put the visitors in front, silencing the home crowd.
Lyon maintained their high intensity, creating several chances. Marseille struggled to find their rhythm, absorbing the pressure from the outside. Both teams fought fiercely for control in midfield.
The first half has also seen great challenges. Clinton Mata del Lió received a yellow card in the 30th minute for bringing down an opponent. Tyler Morton joined him in the referee’s book just before halftime to delay the game.
Lyon kept the narrow 1-0 lead at the break. Marseille needed a significant tactical change and more attacking intent to revive their hopes. The home side had to find a way to break Lyon’s strong defence.
Marseille started the second half with renewed vigor. His efforts were rewarded almost immediately. In the 51st minute, Lyon’s Corentin Tolisso thought he had doubled his tally, but VAR disallowed the goal for offside.
Only a minute later, Marseille took advantage of the suspense. Igor Paixao equalized in the 52nd minute, scoring an expert goal. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg provided the crucial assist and leveled for Marseille.
The match continued with its frantic pace. Lyon regained the lead in the 76th minute through Rémi Himbert. Endrick secured his second assist of the game, setting up Himbert to fire past the Marseille keeper.
However, Marseille refused to give in. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang tied the score at 2-2 in the 81st minute, taking advantage of an opportunity created by Igor Paixao. Then, in the 90+1 minute, Aubameyang struck again. Ethan Nwaneri’s assist allowed Aubameyang to guide home the winner, sparking wild celebrations.
Marseille finished with 52% possession and 18 shots in total, seven on target. His expected goals (xG) stood at 2.0. Lyon had 48% possession with 12 shots, six on target and an xG of 1.2. Lyon also committed more fouls with 16 to 8 of Marseille.
