Man UTD names the Olympic legend to lead the new stadium project

Manchester United has named the Olympic legend Lord Sebastian Coe to direct the development of its newly proposed new stadium: the central piece of the Old Trafford regeneration project.

COE, a twice an Olympic medalist and current President of World Athletics, has been appointed designated president of the Mayor’s Development Corporation (MDC), the new body that oversees the transformation of the area around the old trafford.

The project, scheduled for a decade, aims not only to deliver a state -of -the -art stage – which would become the largest in the United Kingdom – but also to revitalize the surrounding district with investments in housing, infrastructure, education and transport.

The United presented its plans for a new 2 million pounds in March, which will be built near the current stage, widely considered out of place and in poor condition. The club expects to complete the project within five to six years and finally host the final of the World Women Cup 2035 in the new venue.

Lord Coe, who previously directed the Task Force Old Trafford, who explored the initial viability of the stadium and the broadest development – and famously presided over the success of the 2012 London’s Olympic and Paralympic success, said that he was “delighted” to continue working on the initiative.

“Throughout my career, I have seen the difference that can be regenerated by sport to foster strong communities and act as a catalyst for economic growth,” Said coe. “This was certainly true at the London’s Olympic and Paralympic Games, and now, I think, the time of Greater Manchester has come.”

“It’s much more than a stadium. It’s about listening to and working with residents to create a vibrant and inclusive district, with high quality homes, green spaces, world -class leisure facilities and improvements transport links.”

United’s CEO, Omar Berrada, praised the appointment: “Lord COE’s leadership and trajectory in the delivery of transformative projects will be indispensable as we work together to turn our collective vision into reality.”
